My understanding is that you cannot substitute a bow during shotgun season, nor can you use a bow tag during shotgun season.... Iowa is one of a few states that do not let bowhunting during gun season.... you can substitute muzzleloaders and I believe some pistols during shotgun season.
I can't say exactly, but I bet it has something to do with the liberal length of archery season we have already. We really have it good compared to many other states. It doesn't bother me a bit to shut'r down for couple weeks of gun season.
River Bttm Boy, I am not saying that I should be able to use my bow license during shotgun season, but if I want to be on stand with my bow, wearing orange during shotgun season and I have a tag valid for shotgun season, why not?
Kelcher,
We had this discussion a while back on here and it basically comes down to the bow season is long enough and gun hunters need their fair time in the woods. Not a lot of logic behind it, I haven't looked into it but I believe most states allow you to hunt with bow during gun season as long as you wear orange and have a gun tag. Some people seem to point the finger a safety but if your in orange that holds very little water in my opinion.
On a similar note... I am a bit suprised that during late muzzleloader season when bow is a legal weapon why you couldn't use a crossbow. I think that would be kinda fun and different. I don't believe in using them during bow season unless you are handicapped. But since you can use a muzzleloader, why not allow crossbow's??? Just my opinion.
