Bow hunters in DM have already harvested 81 deer

As of Monday, hunters reported that they shot and killed 81 deer in city parks and on residential lots. In 2006, hunters harvested 66 in the city for the entire season, said Mike Gaul, who oversees the city program.
The current season runs through Jan. 30.
<st1:City w:st="on"><ST1Des Moines</ST1lace</st1:City> has offered the urban hunt for more than 10 years. City leaders decide where people can hunt - only with a bow - and hunters must pass a proficiency test.
No one has reported a hunting-related accident as part of the program, <ST1Gaul said.
Seventy-four hunters were approved for the program this year. They can hunt 125 public and private properties, including <st1laceName w:st="on">Ashworth</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Park</st1laceType>, <st1laceName w:st="on">Case</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Lake</st1laceType>, Chautauqua Ravine, Crocker Woods, <st1laceName w:st="on">Ewing</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Park</st1laceType>, <st1laceName w:st="on">Laurel</st1laceName> <st1laceName w:st="on">Hill</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Cemetery</st1laceType>, <st1laceName w:st="on">MacRae</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Park</st1laceType>, <st1laceName w:st="on">Pioneer</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Park</st1laceType> and <ST1<st1laceName w:st="on">Prospect</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Park</st1laceType>.
Of the 81 deer harvested, 28 were in city parks and 53 were on private property, Gaul said. Three-quarters were female deer, a key statistic for population control, he said.
