Bow season - maybe, maybe not

I just learned a few days ago that I may not be able to shoot a bow for up to several weeks. I have had some back problems, and as a result, my left arm has lost a lot of strength. I am undergoing physical therapy twice a week, but I was told that a short-range goal is 4-6 weeks before being able to pull my bow. Actually, I can pull it back just fine, but my left arm is too weak to hold it during the draw. This is really a bummer, but after looking around, I realize it's not the worst thing that could happen - it just feels like it. CamoKid gets to hunt youth season tomorrow, and I will be part of that hunt. Plus, I can guide him and video during bow season. So, there is still plenty of entertainment ahead. And, I am hoping to cut that 'short term' time period down to 2 weeks. Our hog hunt is scheduled for late October, and I am really wanting to do that with my bow. I have a bit more arm strength than I did a couple days ago, and have some homework assignments to strengthen it more. Hope it works. . .

Sorry to hear about your arm, I hope you can get better at least before your Hog hunt. Good luck and keep us informed on how things are going.

good luck

....if you need someone to take your spot on that hog hunt.....

I know how you feel Camo, I wasn’t supposed to shoot at all last season according to the doc, but instead cranked the pounds down on my bow and modified how I drew, plus set a limit of 10 yard shots or less. It wasn't pretty but it worked. Even if you had to wait the 4 – 6 weeks it would still put you hunting in November. I hope you heal up fast. Take care of yourself.

I think it was a hunting program from Knight and Hale on the Outdoor Channel I was watching......They were bowhunting and were using a stabilizer of some sorts that attached to their forearm......once at full draw they shifted their arm a little bit and the stabilizer attached to their forearm came down and rested on the pelvic area. Basically it's a brace that helps your holding arm from fatigueing too quickly. I've never used one, and I don't know anyone who has, but it looked like it was simple to use and worked really well. Not sure if you're interested in anything like that, but I thought I'd tell you about it anyway. Hope everything works out for you.

my suggestion is don't mess with a shoulder injury. missing this season is a small drop in the bucket if you were to try and hunt and hurt it so bad you could not bowhunt again. get healthy and work your way back into it. keep up the physical therapy and see what the Doc says in another month. even if you take off 4-5 weeks you still could come back and be in the middle of the rut.

I believe with such an injury you could qualify for a crossbow permit. This may or may not be something you want to pursue, but it would get you out during archery season anyway. Good luck!

If there's pain involved I would'nt push it too soon. But if it's atrophy related I would back off the poundage and give it a go.

I tore my rotator cuff in football last year and they told me i had to have surgery i had opted to wait until january 11 to get my surgery. Well make a long story short. i got a shot at a nice buck and shot a lot of pheasants so the wait was worth it.

Hey guys and Kat, you are a great encouragement to me. My physical therapist gave me a specific exercise for my arm, and you can bet I'll be doing it regularly. I did pull CamoKid's bow back once (about 48 pounds), but couldn't do it twice. No pain, just a rubber arm. I won't push my luck if the strength isn't there, but I will do everything I can to get it back. If it comes back soon, hooray for me. If not, then I guess God wants me to concentrate on being a guide and photographer for awhile. Thanks for the kind words and suggestions.

there is a device that you can mount on your bow that is called "draw lock". you can get one a Ridgeview bait and tackle. Ron is the owner. I had elbow surgery in aug and will be using crossbow this season.

Camoman,

I am a disabled veteran, with a back injury. This is the first time in 3 years that I am going to be able to hunt during archery season.

I have 2 doe tags for a special hunt and you are welcome to one of the does that I will harvest. If you would like to have one, please let me know. It is the least I could do for another hunter. This was done for me and I would pass the tradition on.

ReleaseHunter, thanks very, very much for the offer. I'm still doing okay on deer meat from last year, and am optomistic that my son, CamoKid will have success during this youth season. Nonetheless, really I appreciate your offer.

As a follow-up to my last post, I did draw my son's bow 3 or 4 times today. Probably will have to back off that for awhile, because I had to turn my left arm to lock it, and after the third draw, it started to hurt in a new place. I am anxious . . too anxious . . to get going, but will force myself to 'work the program', and not try to go faster than my original goal.

I'd go the camera route until you get back into shape. Then we could all see what you got to "shoot" for the day, and no tags wasted! Might be fun.

Well guys and Kat, I think I have good news. After a little more than 3 weeks from the first 'session', I was able to pull back and shoot my bow a few times today. I shot 5 arrows, then put it away. Still cannot draw it straight back, because my left arm collapses before the poundage lets off. But, if I point the bow upwards a little (like you do when the poundage is too high), I get good leverage, and can draw it 'sorta' smoothly. I shot arrows from 10-20-30-20-10 tonight, and had a 3-4 inch grouping. That was kinda exciting and rewarding for me.

CamoKid and I have not been out bowhunting yet, and won't have a good chance to get out til Monday or Wednesday. There is much arm strength to be built up, and I wonder how I would do in chilly weather. Regardless, I am excited, because our hog hunt is on October 25-27th, and I REALLY wanted to be able to bowhunt then. Once again, thanks for your encouragement earlier. I hope the 'Kid and I have some harvest photos to share with you this fall. Happy huntin' !

Glad to hear your back into it Camo just remember to take it easy and don't strain it to much. Good luck on the hog hunt I went this summer and had a blast.
