Bowfishing Setup

Hey guys I am wanting to get into some bow fishing this summer I have done it before but never owned my own equipment.. I have a Browning Illusion bow and a Browning Wasp Recurve I was wondering what you guys would use and how you would set it up?

I've never bowfished but I'd take a 'cheap' bow out on the water and leave the Illusion home. Just watching some bowfishing shows on tv I could see where a guy could either damage a bow or lose one. My $0.02.....

Just happened to watch the aerial bowfishing episode of Gettin' Close the other night - man I love TiVo /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I went with some guys in Texas last summer that go all the time and all they shoot are used Oneida's. They turn them down to 40 lbs or so and shoot all night long. The brewskies may have played a roll but we had a blast. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Here's their huntin rig

I shoot a recurve for bowfishing. PSE Kingfisher, its like $100 new. AMS retriever reels are the only way to go imo. I am also getting ready to buy the AMS fishhawk bowfishing bow. If you are shooting a compound, you don't want any let-off so you can snap-shoot them.

Go to www.backwaterbowfishing.com for all things bowfishing.

AMS Setup.

Bow is really up to you. I know my fishing bow takes a beating. I stand on top of a metal railing on a bridge and shoot down into knee deep water. My arrows take a really really REALLY bad beating. Slamming them into the rocks alot. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I have a old Hoyt compound set up as my carp bow. I use a AMS retreiver, brass round fish arrow rest, and sting-a ree fish points. I don't recommend the wire style barbed arrow as they do not take the punishment from rocks at all. Blast to catch the carp spawning, when it is not uncommon to get 2 in one shot.I cut off the plastic fletching from my arrows as it is not needed at the distances that you will be taking shots from. Even though I shoot my hunting bow wih a sight and release, I shoot my carp rig with no sight and bare fingers. I am 52 and still enjoy slaying carp!

Yeah it is a blast last summer the ditches in SW Iowa near the missouri river were filled with carp since the Missouri blew its bank. So a buddy and I shot carp in the ditch with our bows but we didn't have a reel so we jumped in with our rubber boots and threw them on the road.. I also did a little in Manawa with a buddy but used his equipment. I am set on the AMS jug reel but you guys think that will work pretty good on recurve??

The AMS reels work awesome on recurves. Oneida makes several bows specifically for bowfishing. Alot of guys shoot them, but they are pricey, like $475. I have $220 in my whole setup and I killed alot of fish with it last year. You need to go out on a boat at night for the real deal experience. It is constant fun. I don't know how far you guys are from Rathbun, but I will be up atleast twice this summer for some night shooting. I will have room for a couple guys if anyone is interested.
