bowhunter safety course

Anyone know when one will be available?? I found out that if you're born in/after 1977 you must have a bowhunter safety certificate to hunt turkeys in Nebraska. Being born in 1977 puts me S.O.L. and in a very tight spot to continue on this turkey hunt.

Is there a way to get a certificate prior to a class and then taking it??

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

The closest one I found a couple of years ago was in Pella. It was a 2-2 hour evening and 1-4 hour morning class and the certificate took a month or so to receive. I thought that if you had a "hunter" safety course taken, and you would have had one at your youthful age would work for most out of state applications. Please check your pm's as well. rudd

For IBEP course information contact the DNR at (515) 281- 8652. You can also contact Dave Mason (IBEP State Volunteer Chairman) who lives in Coggan (near Cedar Rapids) at (319) 435-2612. He may have some knowledge if there is an IBEP class in your area.

There is no way you can get a certificate first and then take the class at a later date.

Hickory Ridge Bowhunters in Pella does offer the BowHunter Safety Course, but usually not until mid-summer. Anyone interested can contact us at our email: email@hickoryridge3d.com or check out the Hickory Ridge Bowhunters website for more information and timing of the course. Please sign up or let us know your interests early because if we have no interest, we will not hold the course. It is a good idea for everyone to take it because you never know when you will run into a situation like Muddy and need it for an out of state hunt. More and more states are requiring it all the time.

gunrunr, are you a member of the Hickory Ridge Bowhunters? Some good 3d shoots down there. I took the course the last year Lowdell Taylor was involved. Very informative class.

Yes, I am on the Board at Hickory Ridge. We have around 6 of our members certified as Bow Hunter Safety Instructors, myself included. The course is generally given in Late July but could be offered at other times if enough interest was shown.

Thank you for coming to shoot our 3D's. We try really hard to put on some good shoots. I have several thousand dollars worth of new targets coming in soon as we strive to have the best target quality of any shoot around. I've placed our 2003 schedule up on our web page as well as have all scores posted for the past couple of years.

Lowdell has been greatly missed by us all. He was a real treasure and things just haven't been quite the same without him.

Very irritating about the stipulations and requirements on safety courses. I've been bowhunting since I was 8 and am totally anal retentive about safety. There are guys I know who are "legal" according to diferent bowhunter safety requirements and don't have to take them, but are totally worthless as bowhunters. They take head shots with a bow, gut shoot deer at long ranges, wound several deer a year...the list goes on an on.

I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Muddy, I've bowhunted for whitetails the last two years in NE and I just give them my Michigan hunters safety number. I took the course when I was 12 and it covers all hunting, it's not archery specific. I've never had a problem buying a tag with just having taken this course.

I buy my tag through their web page and I believe I just typed in my card number.

The Nebraska web site says that if you were born on or after Jan 1, 1977 you must have completed a Bowhunter SAfety course to buy a non resident archery tag. I guess I could go gun hunting but that just isn't fun for me anymore. Thanks for the replies...I'll try South Dakota or do a full weekend of shed hunting instead.

Muddy,
Can't you just show them a bowhunter tag or license from any other state and be ok? Im going to Montana in september to hunt elk and i know they require a bowhunter safetly course too, however they do allow you to show them a bow hunting license or tag from any previous year you have hunted.
