Box calls

I'm going to cash in a gift card New Years Day. Thinking part of it will be for a box call.
What are some of the things to look for in a box call?Size, sound etc. Is a slate call the same as a box call only different?

One of the best ones I have used is the Lynch's (World champion, or foolproof) or the Drury's (Hammer).

They are not waterproof like the one Muddy mentioned but I have not had a problem with them I just don't let them get too wet.

The box call is all you will need for making all the most realistic sounds of the wild turkey.
They are easy to use and can be easily mastered.

A slate call will also make all the sounds a box call will.
My slate call is also waterproof. Use different pegs for different
raspier sounds of the hen turkey and the tom.
I prefer my slate call for excellent clucks and purrs. I really like to use them once a bird is committed and some soft purrs is all you need.
Good luck and let us know what you pick out.

Primos HeartBreaker, and Lil' Heartbreaker are great calls for the money. they sound excellent, and one always accompanies me to the woods..... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Well i went with the Primos HeartBreaker! Don't Really know why just liked the feel and sound?? Got to start some where!
I also picked me up Pretty Boy. Now i have to pick up a real fan till i shoot my own.I was looking on Ebay at some. Do we have Eastern Merrimans or does that depend on what part of state you hunt? I was talking to my neighbor last spring about hunting turkey and i got the impression he was hunting a different species than me!
I was hunting next to Missouri River and he was hunting up in Loess Hills so the ones i was hunting could be out of Neb.
Back to the turkey fan. Boy the fan that comes with the decoy is sure cheesey for the price.
OH does anyone on here happen to have an extra one for sell?

We have Easterns in Iowa.

BUT....there are hybrid turkeys on the Missouri river bottoms across from Nebraska. Over the years I have shot 3 that have almost pure white Merriam-like tail tips. If you look at the NWTF map of the turkey subspecies, Nebraska is supposed to have hybrids all along the Mo River. And let me tell you, there are plenty of hybrids (and easterns for that matter) that fly back and forth across the river into Iowa.

Oh, and Lynch calls are my favorite box calls.
