Has anyone ever planted brassicas with buck forage oats or winter rye. I read that cereal grains should not be planted with brassicas. Does anyone know the reasoning behind this?

One reason would be different planting times for optimum deer usage. Brassicas should be planted end of July and Cereal grains around Labor Day. Another reason would be that the agressive growth of brassicas would eventually shade out your cereal grain. You might be able to plant brassicas and cereal grain together if you kept your seeding rate for the brassicas real low. Another option that would be much better would be to split the plot in half and plant separately, this would allow you to plant them at the correct time.
I have planted left over brassicas with oats and rye in early September. With good growing conditions they can get 6-8 inches high and make a nice salad mix for the critters.
