Breaking In a New Rifle

First, I apologize if this topic has already been threaded; I couldn't find anything in the search function.

I know there are some great marksmen and probably many-a-gunsmith on here, what are your thoughts on breaking in a new centerfire rifle? I've Googled a lot of articles and only came to the realization that the topic is akin to debating Democrats vs Republicans, Catholic or Protestant & Iowa vs Iowa State.

What are your methods to get your guns started on the right track?

I usually start by overheating the barrel and putting a few scratches in it.

I dont believe in a break in period, as far as you hurting the gun, I do think that after X number of shots that you improve consistency though.

I have 300 winmag that I did all the breaking-in. I studied for a month before firing a round through it. Guess what...

By the time you find what ammo it wants to eat or what load you come up with that works best - it will be broken-in. Shoot it & enjoy it. Pretty hard to "ruin" a rifle these days.

In the early days when barrels were rifled with a cutter, then yes, a break in period was required as the cutter left very sharp edges on the lands. There were several ways of breaking a barrel in, lapping the bore with a lead lap probably being the preferred method used by most barrel makers of the day. Today's modern barrels are mainly button rifled or forged on a mandrel and if done correctly are as smooth as glass from the get go, no need for break in.
Shoot it and enjoy it.:way:

When I bought my RRA .223, I was told to clean the barrel after every shot for the first 20 shots. Then after every 2 shots for 20 shots. Then after every 5th shot for 20. Took forever, I will say that.

I cant believe you did that. DPMS has the same recommendation I believe. My last two, I just burned a few clips through. In about 10 seconds. Let em cool off, and settled in to get sighted in. Bang flop! But with the dogs you kill, you clearly did something right!! :drink2:
