Broadhead test flights

Today in all my holiday boredum, and between scavenging ham, I shot two broadheads in attempt to determine which one I will use this year. Today's combat featured the Muzzy 3 blade 125 gr. vs. G5 Montec 125 gr. After 25 arrows each, from 20 to 35 yds, I think Muzzy defeated G5, but not by much. Both shot close to my field points with Muzzy a little more accurate. I will have to make sight adjustments for hunting, but just a little. Penetration was dead even. I was shooting into a new "Block" so gaging penetration was easy. One big difference was the G5 made a much louder "hiss" as air passed between the openings in the blades while in flight; with the Muzzy flying more "stealthy" with a "thump" ending the trajectory. Looks like it's Muzzy, but I intend on testing additional heads. P.S. Shooting was done using a Hoyt VTec, 70lbs., Tru-Ball release, and Carbon XPress 350 Maxima shafts.

You and I have completely opposite results...I have not had a Muzzy shoot true for me in awhile but the GS's skim my fletchings on my Field points

Shredder,

Any noise for you when shooting the G5 as I mentioned in the first post? How much adjustment did you make between your field points and the G5 hunting head? Also, last year I tried the G5 Tekan, but didn't like the fact that every time I shot the things the deploying blades nearly severed, or did severe, the rubber O ring.

Shooter,

I know it gets a bit pricey but I buy a practice set and hunting set of heads to get a good feel of how they're gonna fly. I can say the Tekans flew exactly like my field points, with no adjustment needed, but darn dear cut the O ring on every shot. They fly great though. How were your results on the deer shots?

I have never noticed the hiss sound Jdubs...I will look into it further and see if there is difference.

I shoot the G-5s as well and have not noticed any hissing noise. My field points and broadheads fly exactly the same no sight adjustment. If your bow is set-up properly no sight adjustment is needed for the G-5s from my experience, not sure about Muzzy heads. Make sure you spin the arrow on an arrow spinner with the head in place if the tip wobbles at all you need to make adjustments to your insert or broadhead.

If I could pick any head to shoot it would be the one below but it doesn't come in a 3 or 4 blade

Rudd,

You know what, I believe you must be correct. When I bought the G5's I noticed the package was different than what I saw in archery season(2004). The clerk told me the heads were the last set from the year before. Thanks.

Nonres, how is performance on game? Just curious if you shot deer, or any big game animal, with your Montecs.

I have had zero problems with the G5's. The deer that I shot here in Iowa went in one lung, knocked about a three inch chunk of spine out and went out the other side. It is still razor sharp and perfectly straight. I used a Steel Force serrated broadhead in SD for mule deer, cause I got them to fly better at distances. It got the job done that's for sure! Going to try Rocket Broadheads this year!

Jdubs,
I shot 3 deer with my Montecs this past season, two were double lungs and they didn't go 50 yards. The third was one lung and some liver he made it about 125 yards. I was happy with the results and will be using them again this season.

Jdubs I had complete pass throughs on both does. They did cut the o-ring after they opened but I just replaced it with the package of them you get with the broadheads.
