Brutus Update

well, sorry for not updating sooner, i am going through a pretty rough period in my life right now. as far as Brutus goes here's the update:

went out the following morning and had found 2 different places where he had bedded down in the same hollar. only thing was that the beds was the only place that there was blood and there wasn't much of it. knowing that i or someone needed to be in the area a lot over the next few days, in hopes of catching him passing through again. well knowing that i wasn't going to be able to my brother-in-law set up a stand about 100 yards SW of mine a little farther down the hollar. he sat all day sunday with no sighting and all day monday and finally caught a glimpse of him passing by at 60 yards with his nose planted right behind a doe.

he told me he got a good look at him through binos and he appeared to be having no problem keeping up with the doe, and he could still see where i hit him due to a patch of hair missing. so i pulled out a pic of a deer and told him t point exactly where he saw the hair missing. he pointed directly behind the shoulder, and possibly about 3 inches lower than i would prefer, but we both still feel, he should be a dead deer. he said it's possible i may have caught a little bit of the back of the shoulder but still looks like a definite kill shot. hang on it gets worst.

he spent the next 3 days on stand with no sightings. then i was working on my house wednesday night and the man who is doing my chimney(also my neighbor where i am living at now) showed up to do a little work. he told me that there was a monster of a buck killed up behind where i am living at now, which is Brutus's core area, and where i had shot him.

chimney man told me he was taking to the man who lives about 1000-1500 yards on the other side of me and that neighbor told him that on tuesday evening he saw a man dragging a buck through the field in front of his house at around 4:30. he said that the man stayed as close to the wood edge as he could, he left the deer there and continued through the field to his truck and drove his truck out through the field to pick up the deer.

the neighbor told my chimney guy that he had no problem seeing how big the buck was clear out through that field at about 800-900 yards. then after the buck was loaded the man took his truck back through the field and got on the main road in front of my neighbors house and he said that the rack stuck well over the bed of the truck.

the same man who was seen dragging the buck is the same man that has been run off that property 4 different times for me and my immediate family are the only ones with exclusive rights to hunt this property. i have tuned this man in for tresspassing before and nothing has been done, even though i have given them his name and address. he owns 4 acres of field that border the front side of this 31 acres that i hunt and he automatically feels he has rights to hunt it. i called the land owner last night to see if maybe he had given this gut permission to hunt there for some reason this year and he told me "no, but this guy was bugging him an awful lot!" so i asked him again if i seen the man up in there again if i still had the right to run him off and he said "yes, you know who i allow to hunt on there"

i have been making repeated phone calls to different avid hunters like myself who also try to keep track of all big bucks taken in the county, for they know how much time and effort i had invested in this buck and how bad i wanted it, and we're all trying our best to find out if someone slips up and says that a big one was taken in my area that had also been recently shot by another hunter. it may take a while but it will eventually slip up. i can only hope that this buck was not Brutus, but according to my neighbors description, it sure sounds like him! although i don't have a real good description, but once again it sure sounds like him!

Sorry to let ya'll down, apparently it's just not meant to be!!!

Pete

Hi Split, I've been wondering how you've been doing and what happened with the deer. I sure hope it wasn't Brutus that guy shot. I know you have some great genetics where you are, with having two Brutus' in a row, maybe it could have been a different buck? But wether it was him or not, at least you know he didn't die somewhere that you couldn't find him. It sure sucks though. Maybe you weren't meant to get him, maybe you were meant to get Brutus III...

Hang in there Split, glad to see you back.

vengeance......
Good things happen to good people.
The opposite is also true.

I'd find the gut pile before its gone.
Collect some evidence draw a conclusion and then decide a course of action.
I know of a guy, I actually like, that is hunting where he has no permission to be. What have I done... nothing.. to date.
