DNR Investigates Buchanan County Fish Kill
BRANDON — The DNR is investigating a fish kill in Lime Creek in Buchanan County on Friday.
A resident reported Thursday afternoon that they had seen dead fish in the creek on Wednesday. Upon investigation Thursday evening, the DNR found dead small mouth bass, suckers, catfish and minnows along a three mile stretch of the stream. Dead fish were found from 1.5 miles southwest of Brandon to Lime Creek County Park, 1.5 miles northeast of Brandon.
While counting efforts are still in progress, DNR Fisheries staff reports having already found hundreds of fish in the area that appear to have been dead for a few days. The source of the kill has not yet been determined.
“We encourage people to call in fish kills as soon as they see them,” said Tom McCarthy, a DNR environmental specialist in Manchester. “The area of land that drains into this creek is large, so it is especially it is important to get an early start in order to get a solid lead on what caused the kill.”
The DNR is taking field samples and will continue to investigate the incident.
