Buck Decoy's (Motion or no motion)

SCOFFIN

Miles Coffin
Been looking at Buck Decoy's for this season and I'm curious what your thoughts are on buying one that moves vs one that doesn't. They make that one that the head and tail pivot in the wind. Don't know if that is necessary or if one that stands completely still will be a more aggressive stance to a buck and bring them in better.

Seen both used in hunting shows, but I always take that with a grain of salt in my purchasing decision..

I know this sounds crazy but I would set one up like we did on our antelope hunt. I would probably buy the one that the head moves and tail. I would then set up it to get a full 180 degree motion on it. Very easy to do with about $15 bucks in supplies or less. Mainly 3/4 inch schedule 80 pvc.

What you could do is make stakes that have a loop end. and run the rope through them. I would put one about 10 yards in front of the decoy and one at the base of the tree. You then run the two strings up to the tree. You could simply pull on one string and the decoy would move one way. Pull on the other it would move the other way.

I can't imagine it not being dynamite. If a buck comes out a certain way, you simply swing the decoy to face him head on. It will P him off and I bet he would come right in. You could also use just one string and bungee cord to make him move but the problem is it will swing back to the orginal position unless you had a way to stop it from the tree.

One of these years I am going to try it. The picture below is before i painted the PVC. Looked awesome when done and worked well.

Montana decoys

i've used the Montana doe's for the last 7 yrs and they have produced 7 good bucks the best a 158 1/2 i use 3 or 4 and position them so deer can see them from different positions and when a buck is chasing a doe and she see's the decoy she will come in to be near the decoy and the buck is over joyed to be in a harem. these seem to work just before the rut and during after the rut the does seem to stay away from them

Liv, that is nice. I have been thinking of putting either a real tail or real antlers on my Carry lite. Actually thought of repainting it to make it look more realistic. I think your idea would do the trick. I've had bucks bulldoze it as a buck and mount it as a doe but haven't brought in a shooter (150+ for me) to it.

I would like to make something that would do the licking. I think that could be easy enough to come up with and would work especially good with the DSD buck.

Liv come up with something for me. :)
