Buck Growl/Roar Poll

Recently several game call manufactures have been promoting a “new” call in several variations of the Buck Growl or Buck Roar.

Several of the IW moderators were talking about this call. We are curious as to how many of you members have actually heard this vocalization or think you have heard a whitetail buck make this sound.

The below link is from Drury Outdoors.

Buck Growl

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I have heard it and have seen bucks do it. After watching the Drury promo, I think the Primos call mimics the sound I have been trying to imitate a lot better than the Drury call.

I can't get the video to play so I can't answer the question.

My buddy Tom had shot a nice eight point early in the morning, out of my tree stand, about 8 years ago on public land. We checked out his buck then I climbed back into my stand that he had just shot his buck from. Tom pushed a small drive for me, we were pre-rut bow hunting. He finished the drive and came back and sat at the base of my tree and we shot the bull for a while. I was blowing on my grunt tube real loud to show Tom what I heard from a buck grunting a couple days before. The buck was with a bedded doe and was obvious very frustrated.
Right in the middle of me make these ridiculous grunts a buck came shooting over the hill, with Tom sitting on the ground right below me. The buck came in at about 30 yards and gave me a perfect broadside and I took it. It was a crazy day in the woods we had two public land bucks down and one of them was a total accident, because of my recreating the exaggerated grunting I heard the evening before.

This was a story I posted a while back, but the crazy sounds I had heard are the sounds that Primos and Drury are now trying to sell. The vocalization I heard was very loud. A doe had bedded down and the buck was trying to get her up, the sounds were coming from frustration. I would have to say Primos call sound a little more like what I heard in the woods. It was a much exaggerated grunt, a little bit like a cow.

I am surprised this one went down so fast. I thought I would ask one more question, maybe you can do a poll on this too.

While I have heard the buck "roar" in person several times, I have yet to hear a snort-wheeze in the wild. I am wondering how many people have heard that other than on TV/videos.

I heard and saw a mature buck roar while chasing a doe a few years ago. At the time I don't think there was the term, "buck roar."

Last year I heard and saw a mature buck snort-wheeze while aggresivly approaching a two and a half year old buck who was standing with a doe. It sounded VERY creepy and apparently the younger buck thought so too, as he high tailed it out of there!

It was awesome and I feel fortunate to have heard both of these sounds in the wild.

I've never heard a growl, but I did get a nice example of a snort wheeze 2 years ago. A hot doe with 5 bucks in tow came into my stand around Nov 18th. 3 of the bucks were 125"+ with the largest being a busted up 140"ish buck who was obviously a fighter and in control of the group. He did his best to keep her in the thick cover away from the others and whenever they got too close he would trash a sapling and snort wheeze. All I had was a doe tag but it was awesome to just sit and watch the show. I believe I could have killed at least 2, possibly 3 nice bucks that day since they werent paying any attention to anything but that doe. The snort-wheeze was not really all that loud, but the dominate buck was obviously in a bad mood!
With no pressure to shoot anything, it was one of the most fun sits I can remember. Wish I would have had a video cam with me then.

Last year, I heard the buck growl and I didn't know what it was. It sounded just like the deer does on the Drury video, not the call. Then, later that year, my dad shot a buck after it had approached his decoy from behind and did the snort-wheeze 20 yards away. I am going to try the Primos call this year durring the rut though. And by the way, I did buy the Drury call and it is a great grunt call but not a "growl".
