Bullet retention

Here's a question to ponder. I found my bullet just inside the hide of my deer this year. This is the first bullet I've gotten back as the others have been pass thru's. I was very impressed with the expansion and was curious how much retention there was so I weighed it at work and came up with 200 gns. It started out with 250gns. The polymer tip was gone of course and I don't know how much that weighes. But I want to know what is a good bullet retention percentage. 70%, 80%, 90%. I have know idea. All I know is I've used this sabot on 2 deer now and they do a good job as far as I'm concerned...

.... Any ballistic experts out there??

good post moose. two years ago i found my sabot inside a late muzzleloader buck but that was because i shot through the shoulder i assume. i shoot 303 grain Remington sabots and so far every single one has passed through and both the entry and exit holes are pretty much the same size so i'm wondering on expansion. not too concerned though since i'm puttin' the bucks down within 50 yards or less.

I'm by no means an "expert". Several ammunition makers advertise 100% weight retention in their premium sabot slugs. Of course, conditions and what the compostion of the target would would make a big difference. The bonding process used in making the slug is important as well.
Nonetheless, sounds like your slugs are doing the job.

polymer tip wieghs about 15 grains which is disposable. great bullet retention. only problem with sabots is that they are usually a stage 3 bullet, which means they penatrate thick hide and dense bone before they expand. which means on whitetails. it doesnt expand until it is almost out of the animal, the is why you get such large exit wounds. try shooting some that is more of a rapid expander. i like the hornady sabots 240 grain xtp mag open up nice and rapid expansion with nice fragmentation. just a thought. bullet retention is not a must . mike
