Bullet Selection

DOUBLE LUNG

I just purchased a Winchester M70 300 win mag. I have been checking out what bullet i would like to shoot for my elk hunt this fall. Any suggestion on what Brand bullet will do the best job. I know that I want to shoot a 165 grain bullet already.

Try several different boxes, I bought some Winchester Supremes and they shot like crap, but the cheaper Federal Fusions shoot like a dream. I am shooting a .308 weatherby. Buy a box of each kind that you think might work well and then try them. More expensive isnt always better i found out.

First off, I've never hunted elk. When I dreamed of doing it I went as far as buying a Rem 7mm mag. I even went further and bought some 185 grain bullets, thinking I would need something heavier than the 150's I used for deer in Missouri and Wisconsin.

So maybe I was brain washed into the heavy bullet mindset. Still, I think if I was to use a 165 grain bullet I would look at a Nosler partition or a Barnes X bullet to try to maintain penetration. FWIW

I would most likely shoot my 15 year old 185's and buy new if I did go on an elk hunt.

Thanks guys. I think I figured out what I want to shoot. I have been checking out the Barnes X bullets. From the research I came up with it looks like that is going to be my best bet.
