Where I hunt, one of the best spots is an corner of woods along a 20 acre patch of 10 year. It's more of a travel route, but there's always deer there morning or night. I have been thinking of asking the land owner if I could plant a food plot there in that end of the patch, thinking maybe the deer will hang around a little longer. You know, a little corn, beans, alfalfa, clover or what ever. Last saturday I finally ask him about it and he tell's me that he was gonna do it anyway.

He say's he always has some beans and corn seed left over and it goes to waste anyway. He's hoping at least to cut down on deer browse in his good fields. He already filled out the paper work with the gov't to take some of the 10 year out. So I'm gonna help him mow and get it ready. Can't wait til this fall

moosehunter,

If by 10 year you are talking about CRP he should be able to put in food plots up to 10% of his CRP acreage and keep it in the program and still get paid for it. Of course nothing can be harvested.

Moosehunter,
He wouldn't be able to harvest grain from a food plot on CRP but you'll get the chance to harvest venison! Share with the landowner. Now I'd buy a lotto ticket if I were you.

OldBuck. That's what he's gonna do. He did say it was a real pain in the

filling out the paper work though. Lot's of it. He's leaving the crops there so I'm thinking it should be good for late season blackpowder as well.

Ironwood,

I don't know. It is best to check with the NRCS office in that county.

moosehunter,

Right. Standing corn in particular can be very popular with deer in the late season especially if it gets very cold. The ideal late season set up is when you can sneak out without disturbing deer in the food plot. Figure wind direction and escape cover (for yourself) when placing the food plot. Then just keep coming back day after day until the one you want shows up.
