How many people were able to make it out today?
I didn't get there until 2:00 and stuff was pretty much done by 2:30.

I attended and spoke at a Natural Resource Listening Session in Marion today, so figured that was my duty for the day.

I see theres another NRL Session in Ames on the 24th and I'm thinking about attending.

What did you speak to if you don't mind me asking?

Ps. thanks for attending the rally today

I just gave my life's story, born and raised in Iowa, hunted since 1976, bought a farm around 1991, had deer damage, enlisted the help of a bunch of friends and we shot a lot of does. Mentioned I thought we shot the deer population back to late 1980's levels and it's time to start dropping county quotas or ending some seasons, but I'm in favor of leaving that up to the DNR. They are trained wildlife biologists and should know how to manage things (without the pressures of special interest groups). Let them do their job. :way:

I strongly encourage you to go and consider speaking. Only one other person in attendance mentioned deer specifically (maybe they will chime in on this thread). Most people were concerned about water quality, since there are 640(?) impaired water ways in Iowa. Also lots of talk against large "factory farms" because of their impact on air and water quality. I share these concerns as well, but feel all "natural resource" issues need brought up and was happy that we got our 2 cents in on deer issues.

I think a lot of things like this don't get attendance due to simple lack of awareness. I had no idea this was even going on until you posted. I know that's the case with a lot of tree board meetings that I attend

Iowa’s Water and Land legacy came up. The speakers urged the lawmakers present to pass the sales tax. The lawmakers in attendance in turn urged us to keep up the pressure on other elected officials as well. The speakers were preaching to the choir on this issue.

One of the speakers asked that the dove hunting season be repealed or at least ban lead shot because bald eagles (post hoc ergo propter hoc) were dying at record numbers. The same speaker blamed Iowa water on her dog having pancreas problems. There was even a man standing at the entrance with a sign about stopping dove hunting.

When the speakers were done Senator Dearden, Chair of the Senate Natural Recourses Committee, who has been a stalwart proponent for our hunting rights made a few comments on CWD. If the Senator is able to have his ideas passed into law the landscape of high fence hunting in Iowa will change to better protect the wild deer in Iowa.
