I hooked up my brand new 20 year old CB that I had in truck a looooooooong time ago. The display wouldn't light up & it started smoking. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

Does anyone use these anymore & what would be a decent brand & model to have?

I like my Cobra 29 LTD. I have had it since 1985. It has been peaked and tuned and TWEAKED just a little bit and it has a power/echo mic. Years ago I use to drive a grain semi and I had two of them. I also have a Cobra 25 LTD that just sits on the shelf in the garage. It also has been gently tweaked, peaked and tuned and has a power/echo mic.. It will probably go in my sons truck. The best thing you can do to maximize the performance of your CB is to hook an RF Meter up to it prior to keying it up and talking on it the first time. With the RF Meter you can then tell if you have a bad coax and need to shorten your antenna or need a longer one. This is probably your case. Your antenna or coax might have been bad or you didn't have a good ground. Your antenna may have needed shortened as well.

I've only used Cobra. Haven't used one in many years but they were always top of the heap, not sure if that remains true today or not. I always liked the compacts coupled with a firestick or two. That setup reaches out a long ways. 10-4 on the already mentioned RF meter check.
