check stations??

I have mixed thoughts about this....on one hand check stations are a pain in the rump. I've gone through these in other states...inconvienent, sometimes 50 miles or more out of your way to get to one, only open at the DNR's convienience....if you got out of woods late, trying to make it home on a Sunday evening, good luck trying to find one open....then you have to take time off work the next day to check your deer in.

On the other hand...we do need to maintain the health of the existing herd, I don't know of another way to check for this on such a large scale. The other positive benefit would be the ability to check license holders....(especially out of state hunters using resident tags)...I'm sure we'd catch a few more violators this way.

Rembrandt, you are correct , they are a pain in the backside. I hunt in Maryland and all deer must be checked in with the whole carcass intact. A real problem in the early bow season when it is warm and you need to skin and cool right away, but may have to wait until the following morning to find a check station open. Just my 2 cents.

I agree that they may be a pain, but at least for now the article states that it would be on a volunteer level. Also, since they need to do testing on the brain of the deer only, I am assuming that I could take them the head only or maybe even just a sample of the brain? I would definitely be willing to try to help if it was that easy.

Our neighbors to the NE in Wisconsin are taking their testing a step further. Landowners in an 11-mile area will harvest a deer over a three-day period so the deer can be tested for CWD.

Here's the link to the article from WDNR. <A HREF="http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/news/on/2002/on020312.htm#art1" TARGET=_blank>Wildlife officials seek
assistance in CWD testing</A>.
