checking cams & scent control

SCOFFIN

Just curious on what everybody's opinion is on your approach to checking trail cam's. Do you go in with the same approach to hunting and try to be scent free, or do you roll in smelling like old spice and drakkar?

Personally, I'd rather the deer in my area see me and smell me in my everyday walking around smell. That way they know what people smell like. When I hunt they might not be so alarmed by that person looking thing that doesn't smell. I hunt public ground too so that comes into play as we'll..

Thoughts???

Me, I don't worry about scent when checking trail cams.

I cut wood during the winter all over the property. I fish the pond. The crops get planted, the CoOp comes in to spray..... Lots of human activity.

I took a couple of cams out when I was clearing trees off the ag fields after the August 11 straight line wind storm. I was sweating like a pig, running a chainsaw with the cameras slung over my shoulder. I hung them and got tons of pics, no deer acted freaked out.

Thus I'm not worried about scent 365/24/7.

I have to agree, I get pic of the farmers and neighbors cutting wood, I have had a picture of the farmer drive by with his tractor and trailer. Then an hour later a nice buck.

Today I even took the yorkiepoo out to check cameras, they run coon hounds so they also know that smell.

Of course going to sit and hunt is a different story.

I practice no sent control when running cameras. I have noticed deer smelling the camera and where I had walked in the videos from the cameras. It doesn't worry me too much tho.

I keep my cameras accessible with my truck so I can drive up, hop out, switch cards and leave. Now, if I likely won't check cameras until I hunt a nearby stand, so they sit. I know that's not always an option, but if you can do it, do it.

Same here, I put them on mineral rocks (legal in MO) to get early pics. Drive right up to the cam, change the card and be gone. They are not scared of trucks in my area since we do not mess with them at all in trucks at anytime.

I do put them out on my way/by stand sites come early October and check them on my way in or out of the stands so there are never extras times needed to get to the cams.

I drive the four wheeler strait to them. I have found deer don't mind this, although as soon as I step off the wheeler I have spooked them hahaha. so what I do now is just drive strait to the cameras and change them sitting on top the wheeler. This also helps to make good trails to all my camera sites which are typically next to where I hunt : ) last tip. Do it imid day! I think it is human presence early in the morning and right at dark, when they don't normally see us, that really starts to booger them. I just try and act like a farmer working on the land and it has worked well for me. Have fun!

I try to keep mine close where I can hop out like some have said and swap cards. I will say this, I did find the bedroom I think of my top hitlist buck and any cameras in that area I am very particular about. Only check that cam with the right wind and try to watch my scent as much as possible. None of my cameras are baited now that the season has started and I have moved all of my cams to trails and crossings to try and locate bucks and their natural movements.

Would it help if he was a tough little ball of fur :) And a football fan to boot!

I do 2 things, I keep camera's that are hard to reach places off limits unless I'm hunting them,, when I'm in there I always approach them like I would my stands, or I just put the camera in a area where I'll be walking by. If its on a field edge, I try and put them where I can drive to them. During hunting season I always try and wear gloves or spray them down after I'm done.
