Climbing spikes?

Does anyone have any input on the climbing spikes(lineman) that you wear on your boots. I have a friend that swears by them but I haven't heard much about them. I think they look kinda dangerous. Any input would be very helpful. Thanks!!

I would assume that you are thinking of having the spikes to get up to your stand? If that is the case I would not recommend them. I have plenty of experience with the tree gaffs b/c I trim trees. In my opinion they are quite dangerous for someone that has no experience with to be trying to climb and tree with, especially in the dark. Also they seem quite sweet to use to get up but climbing back down is a different story. Another point is that tree gaffs are very expensive, you could buy several pairs of the lone wolf or other manufacturers climbing sticks for the price of one pair of gaffs. If you have any other questions about them pm me.

I know a retired guy that has been bow hunting for years and that is all he will use to get in a tree. I think they look dangerous to me. For someone who hasn't used them they could take some time to get used to. Good luck and don't stab yourself!

Yeah, they are very dangerous. When I was up in school, we actually used climbing gaffs to climb power poles. Theres not much there, and if you dont get the right angles, you slip out and slide down. I always climbed without a belt, but I would recomend one. And in the bark, they are very dangerous. Make sure you practice and dont get to high when doing it. Rotate around the tree getting different angles and positions. If you have any questions, pm me. I am more than happy to help you out..
