Cold Feet Anyone?

This will be old hat to many of you but to me it's new and I figured there are many others out there that are either stubborn or just stuck in their ways like I was, so I thought I would share my experience. In the past cold feet killed me wearing 1000 gram leather boots. Right now I have Irish setter gun flints and my feet would freeze below about 35 degrees sitting in the stand. I can't wear rubber boots such as Lacrosse because I need better ankle support. The only boot in the past that could keep my feet warm was the Mickey Mouse Army boots.

I work for a water treatment company and one of my accounts happens to be a sock company located here in Iowa. I set up an appointment with the plant engineer to specifically discuss my best defense as far as socks for cold weather hunting. We talked for about an hour regarding socks and he recommended to me a specific sock they make and a wick dry liner to wear and he assured me my feet will not be cold. He kept telling me it was all in the liner. I will admit I have always been ignorant towards liners. I couldn't see how they would help but I thought what the heck I will give it a try. I bought the socks and liners and went out hunting.

The first run was a -15 degree morning. I wore my Irish setter gun flints that I knew would produce a ice block of toes in about 45 minutes of sitting. That morning I sat about 2 hours and my feet were just starting to feel like they might get cold. I couldn't believe it, the set up actually worked and with boots that I don't consider to be that warm from past experiences. What I noticed, which is no suprise, that my feet did sweat walking in the morning but the liner totally took the moisture out between my toes and let the sock do all the work. With my old set up of just a wool sock my feet would sweat but would always remain sweated up around my toes therefore my feet would eventually freeze.

From a weeks worth of hunting I can say at the end of the day of endless walking doing drives, sitting in the mornings and evenings my feet were bone dry at the end of the day. This has never happened before. I could actually wear my 1000gram leather boots and stay warm. I won't lie it was dang cold and after about 2 hours my feet were starting to feel it, but this is a HUGE improvement over the past. One day I wore my Mickey Mouse Boots with this sock set up and my feet weren't about to even think about getting cold at the end of the sit.

So in summary, for those of you who don't use liners, give them a try, you will be impressed. I am glad to have finally found something that actually works and I will be able to extend my use of my 1000 gram leather boots which give me much better ankle support than switching to the rubbers. I thought I would share this. I now wear liners even on my day to day work routines and my feet are bone dry when I get home every night. I am sold. :way:

The company is Fox River Mills out of Osage Iowa. They make most of the socks for Carhartt, columbia, remington, cabelas etc. I bought mine off of their website www.foxsox.com The liner sock number is 4422 for full length, 4421 for crew length and its called Therma wick. The actual Heavy weight sock I bought was item # 7014 the Gibraltar Frontiers. I honestly didn't think the extremely lightweight liner would help but it made the world of difference for me in keeping my feet dry. That was always the problem in the past, my feet would sweat and stay sweaty. :)

The next liner I am going to try is the X-static liner which is #4101. Everyone I talked to there swears if you don't want stinky feet or boots wear these liners. I am going to give them a try during turkey season, checking trail cams, and early bow. I have nothing but success stories from all these guys that work there that hunt so we will see. Its hard to beleive that a silver lining will kill microbial but I trust these guys and I have stinky feet so it will be a good test :)

This sock liner is new to me thos year too. When I bought my Irish Setter 2000 gr Snow Claws at Scheels, I bought Scheels extreme weather sock and their liner that they recommend to go with it. Worked awesome in the stand in 15 below and sitting for 3-4 hours. BUT, I also put Ice breakers boot blankets over this setup. When it is 15 below, and you are just sitting, it is hard to be too warm.

They are less then ten minutes from here. Been and toured the place and quiet impressive. They are a great sock!!! They have an annual sale each year and it's nuts how many people show up for it. All around they are a great company.

Sock liners have helped me also in the last couple years. I have a few pairs and they all work good, even the $3 pair from Theisens. My feet sweat a lot and I think that has been my main problem for cold feet. I also got a boot dryer for xmas and am liking that also. Drying them out seems to keep them from smelling so bad.

I've fought this problem my entire life...I feel like a big wussy out there when my toes get cold so quick. I found some relief in a boot made by Wiggy's - the liners are made of sleeping bag material and although warm, the boot has no ankle support.

Good info Liv....you just made a lot of sales for that company. I'm for sure going to get some of the liners.

Let me know what you guys think of them. They worked great for me. I am curious to see how they work for others.

Finally had time to look at their site. Thanks for posting this Liv, I am definately going to be getting some of the liners and warm socks.
