Colder Weather Birds

We may be waking up to temps in the lower 30's and a chance of frost this weekend. What, if any, of your tactics change for cooler weather conditions? Are birds less likely to be active and gobbling in the early morning? Any thoughts......

Don't worry about the temps, they'll be fired up. I remember some good hunts in NE Iowa when the temps didn't make it out of the 20's before noon.

I'm looking forward to it myself.

I'm heading out this weekend too. Chasing turkeys by day and sleeping out under the stars by night (ok...in a tent). It'll be getting down in the low 30s at night, but I love hunting turkeys on crisp mornings. Daytime temps like this weekend make miles of walking really pleasant. The birds are in the mood for love, and a little cool down in the forecast won't change that.

I'm taking off tomorrow at noon to go hunt in central Nebraska all weekend and maybe Monday too. Man, I can't wait!!!!

I think its a good thing. I have had better luck seeing birds when its cooler. And the ticks will be moving real slow!

On wet, cool , rainy days I have had good success in open areas in the timber that have sun hitting the ground. (On wet, warm , rainy days I still think they like the open fields better.)

You may not hear as much gobbling, but they can still be had and will come in silent more often. Then again, sometimes they will gobble their fool heads off. You never know for sure.

I'm with you all on the warmer weather thing. Trying to stay camoed up and beating the bugs off can be a real pain when you're sweating your butt off. Cool/Warm, Cold/Hot that's what Iowa is about. Like the Mossy Oak guy says on TV - "God only gave us so many sunrises - I don't want to miss any." Good luck to everyone this weekend!
