Folks, I thought it would be good to share my Elk hunt with you.
We had alot of bulls in the area and they were bugling like crazy at night and up until about 9:00 am. I called in a nice bull for my buddy. I could see it was a "Royal" 6pt. I was above my buddy on a hillside. The bull was screaming and was with about 6-8 cows. We ran out of daylight with the bull about 50yds from my buddy. The bull was standing in a little alder patch. I could see him but my buddy could just hear him scream and chuckle.
The next day my buddy called in a nice "Raghorn" 5x6 for me. He came in on a rope dounhill toward my buddy. I was standing in broken timber and drew when he passed a spruce tree about 50 yds from me. The bull saw me and stopped and barked. I was shaking by now. My buddy kept calling and the bull was behind a little pine tree with his rear facing me. He would look down at my buddy calling and look at me at full draw. About three minutes he gave me a perfect broadside. I picked the spot at 40-42 yds. He was at about 35-36. Right over his back. He bolted ten yards stopped and walked up the hill and turned and bugled at about 80 yds from me. I'm sitting on the ground shaking and about to hemorrage, I could'nt believe I missed the shot. The movie in my head has been going none stop. My buddy could see the whole thing. He said don't feel bad remember, I missed last year. We both suck now!!!
You guys need to do this while your young!! I lost 7 pounds and I'm in pretty good shape. Our camp was at 9600' and we hunted up to about 10,800'.
It snowed and rained the first three days and the last four were cool and sunny. We made 12 setups total. The wind swirling messed up 6 good setups. The others they just hung up in the timber.
I looking forward to walk where it is level or close to it for deer.
I hope everybody has a safe and good fall deer/turkey season!!
