Coon Hunter Tresspasses Again!

All, I have a neighbor that keeps using the excuse that his dog can't read and he has to go onto our land to retreive his dog when he trees on our side of the fence! The other night he showed me an antler he picked up while around our property but not on. Right. I am pretty upset with this practice. So what is the laws around coon hunters and there dogs etc.???? I need some help because I am going to put a stop to this nonsense right now so I can keep my property as a sanctuary instead of public hunting! Please help me out! Thanks, T$

For starters I would contact the D.N.R. Trespassing is illegal and so is hunting coons out of season. Season ended in January! The hard part will be prooving that he found the antler on your ground. Maybe the Game Warden may be able to scare it out of him! Good luck.

Tell the kid, my bullet can't discriminate between a dog or a coyote either, when he tries to use the dog can't read crap

First he trespasses, then picks up something off trespassed land, seems to be a stolen shed to me,,,go get it back.

Take up trapping. When November gets here start throwing out body gripping conibares for coon. He'll learn to keep a handle on his dog. This sort of attitude you're dealing with really gets under my skin.

I would offer the dog a scoobie snack if he discontinues the trespassing. If that approach does not work because the dog can't speak or understand english, I would then empty the 30 round clip on my mini into his carcass to see if that worked. Always like to try the carrot approach first.

Check with the CO. I know it is against the law to train bird dogs in the field on state ground in the spring due to mating season and nesting. May be the same with coon hounds. And it doesn't matter if the kid says that the dog was just running, if he harms wildlife while under the supervision of his handler he is responsible for it. Kind of like a pointer going in and grabbing and killing a hen during hunting season, or any time for that matter.

He might not be breaking the law by going after his dog on your property but he dam well broke it when he picked that antler up and carried it off the property.Call the DNR and tell em about it.Landowners are always posting about tresspassers on thier property but its suprising how few of them actually report it.Hell call em next time you hear his dog on your property and report him as a poacher, he might not be carrying a gun but he will probably get the hint if the DNR comes out and confronts him

But I would talk with the DNR and try to get the situation settled first.

Maybe blind sow is out there to help us with this one.

I'm sure a 330 conibear would take care of the problem but then again its not the fault of the dog that he is bred to run. You need to hit the kids where it hurts the most and thats usually the pocket book before they will learn a lesson. Tresspass fine would take care of it.
The shed antler thing would chap my butt bad. All you can do is tell the Warden what he told you and hopefuuly get it back. Maybe a creative meeting between the three of you could get it back- trade tresspass charges dropped for the horn!

My Father in law had the same problem. That was until I stuck a million watt spotlight on the trespassers at one in the morning.

Coming on to your land after his dog is not illegal, picking up the antler was. Proveing he did it on your land is another thing. Also, if he is even carrying a pocket knife on him he could get in trouble, try to catch him out and call your warden on him, depending on your warden he could get in some trouble.

I wouldn't try shooting the dog, some guy did that to a coyote hunter a couple weeks back and the coyote hunter pulled an AR 15 with a 20 round clip on him (nothing happened except the coyote hunter going to jail later in the day). Plus, the dog is just doing it's job.

A scare from the warden might be your best bet.

coon seasons been over since Jan. 31 and so if he has been shootin them lately he is poaching so call the dnr, and, the land owner has the right to confinscate any game and or finds that come off his/her ground. Now, this is partially going off memory so you might want to check on the landowner rights, but, I'm sure about the coon situation , so you've got the kid there. Good luck.

i have sorrta the same problem except its wiht a atv. he thinks i cant tell whent he greounds all tore up from him riding on my property well i have caught him on my trail cams many of times and showed them to the dnr and ive had him ride in the public and scare buck away from me when im bow huning the dnr in my area have not done anything to stop them from rideing in the public ground ........i go go through all the damn work to care in my own stand and put them up wiht out doing anything wrong .. then he ride his atv in the public and steals my stand and puts it up on his property......... he tears down my no tresspassing signs..... he will find out what half baried fence posted do when u hit them going throught the tiber

you know, i was in a half way good mood until i read this post. sturred up some emotions. this fall i saw some local coon hunters on some ground i hunt. they had permission, but on the adjoining land that they did not have permission to be on, was my 400 dollar trail cam. key word WAS. when i checked it the next day. it wasnt there. they cut through the security cable by shooting it around a dozen times with a .22. hmmm. doesnt take a detective to figure out who might have stolen my camera. nothin i can do about it though. also. caught some guy walkin out of some ground i hunt a few weeks back. he was shed hunting. he claimed he only walked the RR tracks and didnt go on anyones land. the next morning i followed his tracks. went on three peoples land. he didnt have permission for any of it. go figure, two days later i caught him and some other guy in the middle of ground they didnt have permission for. needless to say i let them have it. i have never had much luck with contacting the DNR.

Are you talking about a kid or a grown man? If it's who I'm thinking it is, then I too have seen the shed and know of where it was found. I beleive that came off of a dike on Berger's?? Maybe it was just a misunderstanding when he had the conversation with you. He runs dogs through the timber in my area, I have no problem with it. 2 190" deer were taken from my backyard area this year, ground that he had exercised dogs on, with no effect on any behavioral habits of the big deer in the area. Heck this guy came driving up in my driveway a year ago, and asked me if my wife or any of my kids shot a deer with a bow the year before. I told him yes, my oldest son had hit on that we didn't recover. He then asked me if we could identify the rack. My son said it was a decent eight pointer. He said okay, do you remember what color his arrow was? I said yea, it was a purple shaft.Smaller diameter for a youth bow. He then walks to his truck and removes this deer skull and purple arrow and brings it over to us. He said he had been out running his dogs and came across this. He asked a couple of people in town about it and they said to come and ask me. So he actually went out of his way making an attempt to find who shot it. He has told me before that if he was out in my backyard and found something he would give it to me. I'm sure he would do the same for you if it was on your ground. I really think there has been a misunderstanding....
