Corn or beans

Lately I have noticed that the deer on the land I hunt are all feeding in the corn field, however the farmer keeps telling me to stay in the outter edge of the bean fields because that is where he has seen the majority of the deer. He does not allow anyone else to hunt and does not care where I hunt on his land. This may sound a little off the wall but do deer have a preference over one food source than the other i.e. Corn over beans and vise versa???

The land I hunt has both corn and beans planted on it, and the farmer rotates the crop location from to year. I will say, that the buck I watched the buck I eventually ended up getting last fall walk through a bean field to reach some standing corn. Guess he wanted the easy meal instead of scrounging through bean stubble for leftovers.

It seems like the deer like to eat the beans early, but then switch over to cornfields around and after harvest. I'd say if your hunting early, place a stand by beans. If your hunting Nov-Jan. then I'd set up for picked corn fields. Good luck.

I agree with tracker, but I would like to add that what the farmer saw was all part of the summer routine for these deer. When hunting season rolls around more than likely the deer will have a different pattern. Most of the time I always go corn or clover over beans. Just me though.

Most farmers rotate and I gave to agree that earlier they like the beans and when it is around harvest when the ears are more exposed they switch gears. They seem to like the beans early because they are more accessible than the corn. When the husks start to bust they switch.

I think it has more to do with the leaves of the beans drying up. Usually by Oct 1 the beans are almost over as a food source.

I agree also,as soybeans mature they become less desirable to deer.So the corn might be the better choice at that time when they make the switch.Don't forget about nearby white oaks and soft mast at that time also.
