I put my camera out over 50 pounds of corn on 2/15 with fresh Radio Shack batteries. I checked it on the 22nd, the corn was gone, the batteries died on the 19th and there were 706 photos on the disc. That same day I put out another 50 pounds of corn, put cheap HyVee batteries in the camera and checked it again this afternoon. After 6 days The batteries still had 40% life and the there were 1182 photos on the disc (966 MB on a 1 gig card).
After reviewing the dics, 50 pounds of corn lasts about 2.5-3days. The first bag of corn was $7.00; the second was $7.50 a week later.
I had my camera set for one minute. Sometimes it would take one every minute and sometimes it was 5-6 minutes even with all the squirrels in front of it. I had it set for a minute because I don’t wanna miss anything. I could set it for night only, but I’m hoping to get some turkeys to come in. The deer come in before dark and after sunrise too.
Of the 1882 photos on the two discs I’d say around 1700 are of squirrels, crows and song birds, not to mention one dog and one rabbit. It’s easier for me to delete the photos I don’t want than it is for me to wonder what I might have missed. I say this knowing I can get to the camera with a bag of corn on a sled and snow shoes. If I had farther to walk I might set the camera for every 5 minutes and maybe even night time only.
I also put out a bag of trace mineral salt with the first bag of corn. I’m gonna let the batteries die and see if the mineral keeps ‘em coming back. It’s a lot cheaper than bags of corn.
Oh yeah, I got one buck and he is a forky.
