corn pile settings?

So, say you have your camera on a corn pile this time of year, how often do you have it take pictures? Once every minute? Three minutes? Five minutes?

How do you deal with the tree rats filling the card up 'Bonk?

For me once every minute is WAY to often...you get 10 pictures of the same group of does feeding...I like 5 minutes better.

I put my camera out over 50 pounds of corn on 2/15 with fresh Radio Shack batteries. I checked it on the 22nd, the corn was gone, the batteries died on the 19th and there were 706 photos on the disc. That same day I put out another 50 pounds of corn, put cheap HyVee batteries in the camera and checked it again this afternoon. After 6 days The batteries still had 40% life and the there were 1182 photos on the disc (966 MB on a 1 gig card).

After reviewing the dics, 50 pounds of corn lasts about 2.5-3days. The first bag of corn was $7.00; the second was $7.50 a week later.

I had my camera set for one minute. Sometimes it would take one every minute and sometimes it was 5-6 minutes even with all the squirrels in front of it. I had it set for a minute because I don’t wanna miss anything. I could set it for night only, but I’m hoping to get some turkeys to come in. The deer come in before dark and after sunrise too.

Of the 1882 photos on the two discs I’d say around 1700 are of squirrels, crows and song birds, not to mention one dog and one rabbit. It’s easier for me to delete the photos I don’t want than it is for me to wonder what I might have missed. I say this knowing I can get to the camera with a bag of corn on a sled and snow shoes. If I had farther to walk I might set the camera for every 5 minutes and maybe even night time only.

I also put out a bag of trace mineral salt with the first bag of corn. I’m gonna let the batteries die and see if the mineral keeps ‘em coming back. It’s a lot cheaper than bags of corn.

Oh yeah, I got one buck and he is a forky.

I was putting out about 200 lbs. of corn a week and getting about 1000 pics. My camera was aimed up high enough that the tree rats rarely triggered the cam. But as you saw last fall, Muddy, I was getting hammered by the coons. The coon problem has been dealt with for the time being. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I went and bought a Moultrie feeder in Jan. and now 200 lbs of corn last 6 weeks and I get just as many pics and they are mostly of deer. The feeder has already paid for itself by the amount of money I am saving on corn. I set the feeder to go off right before sunrise and again right after sunset and the deer have learned when to be there to beat the crows and coons and cardinals to the free dinner.

I will have to change my feeder settings when the turks come back but for now they winter elsewhere so I don't have to worry about it.

I forgot to mention, I, like Bonker don't want to miss anything so I run on the 1 minute setting. I just wish I could get some batteries to last more than 2 weeks. Heck, they barely last 2 days in this cold.

Kansas, try energizer rechargables. I bought some of them and they last around 1500-1700 pics in 0 degree. I have a set of the extreme's from bass pro, and they last a few day in the extreme cold, but seem to do pretty well in the warmer weather.

I usually set mine to 5 minutes w/ an IR cam over a corn pile or mineral site.

Anything less and the deer really don't like it, even if it is an IR cam.

Also FYI my hunting partner has a white flash camera over corn and I have an IR cam over corn about a 1/4 mile apart. Guess which gets hit about 10 times as much. Yep the IR cam corn pile.

Nanny, you say you are getting that many pics off your rechargeables in 0 degree weather. I am lucky to get through 2 days of pics w/ my rechargables which probably isn't over a 100 pics.

My rechargeables must be going bad. I have been using those awfully expensive lithiums this winter just to make it a week w/ around 370 pics.

Yea, but I'm also getting around 450 pics a night to.

I have an IR cam and a flash cam on the same corn pile. Deer don't seem to mind either one of them at all. The flash cam is set to take 3 every 1 min. and the IR is set to take 2 every 3 min. That may seem like it is always going off, but I have caught alot of bucks sneaking through, without the cam set to fast to take so many pics, I would have missed them. Kind of a pain in the butt checkin pics though.

talltines, get a different charger. The one from snapshotsniper.com is a good one.

I saw 19 deer in my neighbors yard last night, apparently someone had dumped some corn in the front yard..... I tried to get a picture and the batteries of my camera were dead... Hopefully they will be in the same spot tonight, and I am ready with fresh batteries...

I was thinking about putting corn in my back yard. With my koi pond, it might be a neat way to see deer in my backyard during the summer, eating and drinking... Will they smell the corn and come running or do I have to do something special to attract them? I was thinking of putting a camera in my gazebo
