Cornfield Hunting??

Cornfed

Bowhunting Addict
With the weather forecast for this weekend and the predicted prevailing wind (mainly out of the West). I am contemplating trying to still hunt a cornfield that borders a thick deer bedding area. I am curious to hear any suggestions from anyone who has hunted standing corn in the past. I have read a few good articles on this topic, but have never seriously still hunted a cornfield. My original plan for Saturday was to hunt a waterhole that I have observed a group of does and a small buck visiting in hopes of putting some early meat on the table.... but with the windy conditions expected, the cornfield is calling me

I'm not sure about your particular setup, but why not try hanging a stand in a good tree next to the bedding area? Of course you don't want to ruin the whole thing by making too much noise or having your scent blown into the bedding area as you enter/exit your stand. Hunting standing corn sounds pretty difficult, even on a windy day, unless the corn is somewhat short (or you are somewhat tall

).

I'd rather take a deer on it's way to the corn, rather than try and shoot through it.

The technique that I am speaking of requires still hunting perpendicular to the standing rows of corn. You 'sneak and peek' into each row looking both ways before actually stepping into the row. Paying careful attention to the 3-6 rows visible in front of you. When it is windy it is quite noisy in a standing field of dry corn so deer pay no attention to noise. I know more than one hunter who has harvested some very nice bucks with this method. Deer spend a lot of time in standing corn.... more than most hunters realize. I believe that many deer never leave the corn during the daylight. I am told that it is an awesome place to hunt during the mid-day..... I am excited to give it a more serious try....

I have a particular buck I will be hunting and have seen him 3 times in a hay strip between 2 corn strips. With the wind out of the NW tommorrow I am going to try to sneak in and lay down in a corn row about 6 or 8 rows in and try to ambush him. I've never tried this before but with this deer I may have to try something unconventional. I think he's smarter than the average bear.

Anyone have any other good ideas?

try it! you'll have a very memorable hunt on your hands if the cornfield is of any size, if you're good and quiet you'll see deer all day, in my experiences from the past deer don't seem to get spooked as bad by other deer in a standing corn field as they would in the woods. it's extremely hard to do if the cornfield is small. i have had good luck with still hunting standing corn. i have only taken 2 bucks this way, one with a shot gun, ones with a bow, biggest was a 110 inch 9 pointer, but have taken 4 does this way, 2 with a bow and 2 with a shotgun. i would definetly try it, especially if you're just wanting to get some meat on the table. also if it is going to be a little windy, i wouldn't even consider sitting in the stand and waiting for the deer to come to you, use the wind to get to them. GOOD LUCK!

There is nothing better to do during mid-day (non-rut) than hunt a cornfield. Nothing like putting the sneak on the deer, and the fact you only see one row at a time is an ultimate adrenaline rush. I have done it many times with no kills but plenty of chances. I use the same strategy you are talking about and it works quite well. I just might have another go at it this weekend to mix things up a little bit!
