Covered Up

Never heard of anything covering up their kills before. Be interesting to see what shows up

. Better pack the six guns Ghost.

my 1st guess would by yote's, since there are few predators in Iowa. But I don't know if they would cover up a kill like that. Grizzly's bury their kills. Havn't seen one of those around have ya?

Maybe someone else know's............

I think I will be packing the big gun when I go to get the camera now. I can't wait to share the photo's I get, should be interesting.

only animal that hides their kill like that is a cat. you have a lion in the area. you should probably show it to a dnr official, to verify. although, i would put a stand in the area and try to shoot it

I didn't really want to say I thought it was a cougar and wanted to hear what you guys thought. I just printed a page off the net called "Living with Cougars".

"Avoid areas where carcasses have been left and be aware that cougars often cover their kill with forest debris".

I am also missing a few of the cats I keep around the barn as mousers.

"Dogs and cats are easy prey for a cougar, never let your pets roam freely".

Now I really can't wait to see what's on the trail cam.

Shovel....to be honest with you I really didn't check for any tracks. The ground was real dry and there were scratch marks 360 degrees around the doe with lots of dirt and leaves covering the doe. I happened to see the white tail of the doe.

Sounds like a your trips (or should I say jogs) to and from your stands in the dark could be interesting

Could this be a bobcat? Can a bobcat take down a deer? I'm not sure but I would think a mountain lion would eat much more than a partial flank from a fawn in one sitting - just a thought.
Hopefully the vcam will capture some pictures.

I know for certain that there are plenty of bobcats around the area. I have seen them more than once and hear them regularly. I hope the vcam shows just that, a nice fat bobcat.

I really don't care for the idea of a mountain lion sharing my hunting grounds. Yes, the pitch black walks to the stand would surely be a rush.

There are however, local trail cam pictures of a big cat hanging in the sporting goods area of the local Wally World.

I know here in Colorado for a fact that Mountain Lions cover there kill. In fact, I've seen the cats actually cover up a doe kill and then had the cub uncover and eat while mom watched. There was a mountain lion last week, relocated from the greenbelt to another location I think in downtown Omaha NEB.

Hey Ghost, I'll bring the video camera and a couple of cans of tuna. We can wipe down Auggie with the tuna and then follow him around the timber. Might get an action shot on film! What do ya think?
