Cowboy

goatman

I hunt days ending in Y
They all don't grow up to be cowboys. After making my son pass this buck two years ago (he was living here) he sure didn't improve much in two years. Bases are bigger. Had no pictures of him last year figured he moved on. Showed up this spring and is coming through about once a week.

For some reason all I see is a red x where this years photo is supposed to be (I assume).

yea, as i have been watching our deer heard over the years and tracking age progression on probably close to 200 bucks or better over a 20 year period, I know the potential for growing a 170" deer is alot less than people realize.. Not every buck has booner potential, like alot of people think.. im guessing its more like 10-15 percent of the whitetails I have studied in the wild carry the genetics that would let them reach 170" if let to live over 5 years old.. there are ALOT of bucks out there that top out in that 130-155 inch range.. A buck that reaches Booner status is a magnificent animal and is extremly rare. Even though it seems as if giant bucks get posted here on a regular basis on this site, the average camera user might think there is booners behind every tree. Far from it.. there is just alot of extremly dedicated whitetail Nuts that go to great lengths to track down whitetails of this caliber here!:way:

mnshedhunter, have you tracked bucks over a wide area in different states, because I think the % that reacher booner scores at 5 will vary depending on genetics and nutrition. The real trouble seems to be many guys over-estimate age. The % of bucks that make it to 5 1/2 is probably only 10% in many areas.

full draw, Mostly SE MN , fillmore and Houston CO. but i have also tracked alot of the deer around my home in central MN. watched alot of bucks grow up over the years and have been running cameras and practicing QDM for over 15yrs. your right about the low number of bucks that reach the age of 5.. I think your right about 5%.. probably less here in MN where our gun hunting in Nov really hurts our potential to grow mature whitetails. as for bucks reaching booner at age 5, most of the time you can see the potential of a buck by age 4 pretty easy. if hes only 130 at age 4 i can almost guarantee you hes never hitting 170 no matter how long he lives.. all the big deer I have had the chance to watch grow up you can tell by age 3 there going to be something special!
