Coyote Caliber

Well, I got an internship with IR Bobcat for this spring starting in January until August out in blustery Bismarck, North Dakota. So my hunting around here is pretty much done for this year and am going to give predator hunting a try. I figure as I am in prime coyote country out there it would be well worth while. There are a bunch of prarie dogs out there too so I will probably be doing some of that as well.

I am looking to get a coyote rifle and am having trouble deciding on a caliber. I think I have it narrowed down to .223, 22-250, or .243. I am thinking .243 just because it is pretty windy out there and am expecting to get some long shots. Also, back home I have noticed the coyotes have certainly been hurting the wildlife populations in my area. I am looking at the new remington 700 SPS varmint. Just wondering what your favorite coyote calibers are and what you are shooting.

I hunt with a .223. I would say your 2 best choices for long rangers would be .22-250 or .204 ruger. I chose the .223 because I wanted an AR-15 and because the ammo is cheap. It doesn't shoot as flat as the other 2 but it can still be a long ranger in the right hands. You can't go wrong with any of the calibers you named, plus the .243 would be legal for deer in most states.

I would say if you want to hunt varmits, yotes and prairie dogs I would go with the .223. If you want to hunt yotes and deer with it a .243 would be great and you still could shoot prairie dogs with it. Can't go wrong with any of the calibers stated. I have seen coyotes drop with all of them at long distances. Becareful shooting that new .204 it heats up the barrel pretty quick /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Some good public hunting land around bismarck. Was out there last fall for a job for a few days and went glassing in the evenings for something to do. Saw some good bucks.

My dad had a 220 swift that was really fun to use on predators, though a .243 would probably be my suggestion.

Have fun!

I like the 22-250 with a light (40-45gr) bullet. Very flat, fast and devastating on any yote out there. Would be too harsh for a cat or fox though if those could be a target.

243. light loads for pdogs, a few grains more for yotes, max load for deer

22-250 is a top notch varmint round as well

.243 is the most versatile. I also chose .223 because I wanted an AR-15. All calibers you listed will do the job. If you go with a .204, you may want to try the .40 grain bullet vs. the .32 grain. More knock down power.

i use either a 204 ruger or 22-250 most offen nowadays but back in the 60s when i started predator hunting i used a 250-3000 savage and that would be my top choice, but thats long been dead and buried.ps. if u want to have fun get a 300 win. mag and buy 110 grain varmit loads and watch um fall!!!!
