Crazy Fletching Job

I had a guy bring an arrow in the store the other day and he said a pro shop fletched it for him. His first feather was about a 1/2 inch from nock, next feather was 1 inch from nock, and his last feather was about an 1 1/2 from nock. It was weird they were all just staggered a bit. He said they flew great. They were four inch feathers. Just thought maybe somebody on here has seen fletching done this way. I wouldn't mind doing a little test but I shoot 2 inch blazer vanes and don't think it would be the same.

Is this a new fletching trick or not

I have seen it several times. Headgear on here I am pretty sure staggers his vanes and shoots 4. I seen a guy shooting indoor as well with this set-up (he also said they shot fine for 3d). I have never personally tried it but a drop away would definitely have to be used.

A little off topic...

I once tok my arrows to a local archery shop to have new vanes and my IW wraps put on. The local pro put the arrow wraps mid way on the shafts. The vanes weren't even touching the wraps.

I have seen that used and have shot arrows fletched with three 4" inch feathers on carbon arrows staggered. I was told that a graduate student that liked to bow hunt studied the amount of drag that an arrow has in flight in a wind tunnel and found that a staggered fletch as described above had the least amount of drag. The cock feather is the closest to the nock. Arrows can be shot thru any rest that the cock feather is down. Drop away rests obviously work as well.

I'm thinking he was using a whisker biscuit. Not sure where he puts his cock feather but I wouldn't think you would want it down on a whisker biscuit. Thanks for the replies I guess it makes sense just looks a little freaky...

speaking of odd things, i found that if i nock my arrows with the cock feather in or down instead of out, they group better. don't ask me why.
