Dangerous situation

I encountered what could've been a very dangerous situaion on Saturday.
I was muzzleloader hunting along an edge of a field with very dense cover surrounding it. As I sat intensly watching the few openings I saw what appeared to be a rack. It was moving west and the next opening for a shot was about 50yds down the fence. So I got ready for the shot in that opening. I saw the movement coming, I could clearly see antlers now through my scope.

Here's the catch....These antlers were on a bowhunters backpack! His camo blended in so well and those white antlers showed up like a glow stick it was scary!

So here's a tip for anyone hunting during the late season with a bow...Wear orange, at least to your stand. It could save your life! And get those rattling antlers off of your backpacks! I've hunted a lot of years and I've never even pointed a gun in an unsafe direction..I was aming at this guy with the safety OFF...Distance was around 90yds.

I hollered at him to tell him what just about happened but he kept walking and I didn't get to say anything to him.

Needless to say I was a little shook up.

good eye pupster. it could've happened to any of us. way to make sure of that target.

Way to keep your eyes open. Had this happened to a person suffering from severe buck fever or greedy hunter, the outcome may have been different. You are right, blaze should be worn by all during the muzzleloading season (I actually thought you had to anyway)

Actually bow hunters are not required to wear blaze orange but they should during the 2 muzzle seasons.

I know you feel like the whole world can see you, but I've had countless deer in bow range with blaze orange on.

Wow Pupster. That made me a little nervous just reading your post! I was bowhunting in the Loess Hills about 5 years ago and some local rednecks decided to go out and shotgun hunt a little early. I got out of my treestand and started walking back to my truck. About 100 yards into my hike back, some shots rang out. I turned around to see where in the heck these low lifes were at, when suddenly a slug whizzed above my head. I was close enough that I could hear the buzzing noise as it went over me and then hit trees down in the valley just ahead. Talk about filling your shorts up! I literally ran to my truck. The thought crossed my mind that maybe running would make things worse. Do they think I'm a deer running away? I was an Olympic sprinter that afternoon. Bow in hand, backpack and everything! Needless to say, I never went back to that guys property! I don't think wearing blaze orange to and from stand is too bad of an idea. I can't say that I do it, but hearing your story sure brings back memories!
Atleast you were able to pick this guy out before you shot. Way to be alert!
