Iowa Boy At Heart
In Arizona, you have to be 10 and have Hunter Ed to hunt big game. That includes turkey. My daughter took the class this summer and was among the highest scorers in her class and has been nominated for a chance at a special youth pheasant hunt. We have a youth turkey season with over the counter tags and a week before the general hunt, but unfortunately, my daughter turns 10 the Friday after the first week of the youth hunt closes. Youth tags aren't valid during the first two weeks of the general hunts, but open back up the weekend of Mother's Day. Her soccer schedule will keep her from hunting those last two weeks so I had to put her in for a general season tag. If drawn, she'd be hunting opening morning on her 10th birthday.
I've been holding out since 2009 for my Gould's tag. I have 13 bonus points and thought this would be my year. I applied for the late Gould's tag and put my daughter for an early Merriam's tag. With our online application system, you can see when your credit card gets hit for the charge. A couple of weeks ago, I saw one charge for the price of a turkey tag. Until the draw results got posted, I had no idea who got drawn. As bad as I want my Gould's tag, I wanted my daughter to get her tag. Last Thursday, the draw results were posted and I got to tell my daughter she got drawn and I did not! She was so excited!! Her tag is for the North Kaibab, north side of the Grand Canyon. I usually try to throw a turkey hunt together somewhere (NM, TX, or a leftover tag for north Kaibab), but I may take this season off to concentrate on her hunt! We can't wait for April 25, 2014!! Hoping to have her tagged out on her 10th birthday!
