What a hunt:
Muddy and I had hunted Sat am with birds gobbling close. We saw a lot, but nothing in close enough for a shot.
For the afternoon we decided to move up to the hills to hunt instead of the river bottoms. We each took a bow and muddy had his DB blind. We setup and I was going to be the video guy. Muddy took a nap and I had to wake him when 3 hens decided to come over the hill into our side of the field. Even though there was a bearded hen they didn't come in range. After awhile longer nature called and we needed a stretch. So we got out of the blind to take care of business. I was looking around real close to the blind and didn't pay attention to muddy at all. Pretty soon I finish and was zipping my pants when I hear him yell get in the blind. I jumped back in the blind and he was making a mad dash for the blind on hands and knees. The tom popped the hill and was looking right at us. Muddy stopped and laid down in the grass about 15 yards from the blind. I couldn't zip the door shut which was facing the decoys. I had front windows open and was not ready for a shot. I had to get out an arrow and put on my face mask. Muddy's bow was in the bow holder kinda in my way. I get ready as the tom was closing the distance. He wound up heading right for muddy so I had to reposition inside the blind. He got to about 21 yards and stopped. I wasn't sure if he was eye balling muddy laying in the grass so I decided to take a poke. I aimed right above the beard and let er fly. It smacked him and he took off on the run over the hill. Time 6:50 pm. We found feathers and looked for the arrow with no luck. We grabbed our bows and went looking for the bird after 15 min's or so. We went on the bluff were the turkey ran and he was in about the first big bush we came to. He took off and flew off the bluff, but you could hear him coming back down. I took off down the bluff to see if I could see him in the bottom. I didn't and waited for muddy to catch up. We decided to walk down to the bottom and check things out. About 5 steps later I saw him laying out in the open. Muddy put another one in him just to make sure. Wound up hitting him in the neck. We found the arrow after looking again after finding where I hit the bird. He weighed about 24 1/4 lbs, had about a 10 1/4 inch beard, and didn't measure the spurs but I would guess maybe 3/4 and possibly close to 7/8. Unfortunately the hunt wasn't captured on video and the best pictures that muddy took out in the field didn't take on my camcorder.
Lessons learned:
1. - Even though I was going to be "camera man" on this hunt I was glad to take the bow. ALWAYS TAKE YOUR BOW.
2. - When nature calls stay close to the blind. This is the second turkey I have taken with muddy within 15 yards outside of the blind taking peeks or pees.
Anyway here are the picks that were taken back in town.
