December Gun Season

Hardwood11

It is going to be a good fall!
This may have been addressed on this site before, but I am wondering if my son (18) can film my first season shotgun hunt without having to buy a tag? We are both non-residents.

Is there a law that prevents that?

Must have tag to be along on hunt. Been down that road taking my mother out with me. Big part of hunting is seeing/hearing your game. Your son could see/hear the game and be helping you.

page 10 in the guide states"All participants in a hunt must be properly licensed and have paid appropriate fees". Seems pretty silly. If you're on private ground, I say film away. I'm sad to say I've broken this law without even realizing it..............ck

That cannot apply to somone doing video, otherwise you would not see many shows from Iowa on the outdoor channel. I would think that almost none of the camera guys would not have a tag and would not be doing it if it were illegal.

Been down this road and called the local CO to verify as long as they don't assist in the hunt in any way mine said it was ok. I would recommend getting an email to the local CO and ask for a response. Make sure you have a copy when you go because during gun season they can be from anywhere.

Ok, that is a good idea I will e-mail the CO on this to verify. It is private land, and I would hate to have him stay in MN because of this.

Anyone know the officer who covers Southern Warren County? Email?

I am 100% sure that NR cameramen have filmed in Iowa for certain commercially made deer and turkey videos over the past 10 years or so. Now whether they were doing it legally or not...I do not know for sure. I would think though that as long as they did not aid the hunt they would be OK.

But, how many times do we see on videos where the cameraman tells the hunter..."Buck coming", etc. If you did do it, I would make sure your cameraman knew he shouldn't alert you to incoming game.

All Participants Must be Licensed
- All

participants in a hunt must be properly licensed

and have paid the appropriate fees. It is up to the

discretion of the conservation officer to determine

whether or not a person is “participating.”

Participation includes, but is not limited to,

handling firearms or ammunition during the hunt,

trying to attract game, driving, flushing, or locating

game, and working dogs.

I had a chance to look it up this morning because of this
discretion of the conservation officer to determine
I would ask.

I would hope the CO would use his power of "discretion" in this case. Because filming is not specifically listed in the regs, prosecution would be difficult. Having an additional person with you filming is not going to give you an unfair advantage. Kudos to you for wanting to include your son in your hunt! That is what it is all about anyway.

cameraman..."pssst...here comes a buck"

just assisted in the hunt.

hunter..."are you on him? can i shoot?"

just assisted in the hunt

Well, yes thanks, if I get the OK he can film me this year and I will film him next year after he saves up some money for a tag. Should be some great memories!

Filming a hunt

FYI: I spoke with the CO and he said the intent of the law is to make sure deer drives are conducted only by licensed hunters.

He said as long as he (my son)films and does not push deer, or assist in the hunt with rattling, calling etc... we are fine.

He also cannot carry my gun or even run back to vehicle to get something that I forgot, which is all fine.

Actually I think it is a good law especially in relation to deer drives. Otherwise you could have unlicensed cousins, friends, nephews pushing deer for you and that is not a good situation.

Thanks guys for help!!
