Decoys in Timber

I have been told it is a bad idea to use a decoy in the woods because it spooks the deer. They should only be used in clearings and field edges etc.

Is this true? Has any one had any luck using one in heavy timber?

I had one set up in the timber and had 5-6 does coming in. When they saw the decoy they turned and ran off from the way they came so i never used one again. Also had no luck using on the edge of a field, but other guys i've talked to swear every year they get bucks to come in but i think most of them are also yearling bucks.

Not adviseable to use one in the timber. As the previous post says, they will spook more often than not. Field edges, hold on to your safty belt. They get downright nasty with a buck decoy and it is exiting entertainment. I am going to use the doe deke in the morning to see what I can scare up into range.

I had a buddy use one 2 weeks ago in the timber. A buck was chasing a doe, the doe spotted the buck decoy in turn the the 10 pointer that was chasing the doe spotted the decoy and the ears went back the hair raised and he came into it. 15 yard shot 130 class 10 pointer. So who knows, all I can say give it a shot, it worked this time. I would use it in the more open setting but I know it will work in the timber at least this one time. Good luck.

stupid question. Have not really used a decoy, but why success in open fields and not in the timber???
