Deer/coyote gun

I want to start doing some coyote hunting and I'm thinking about buying a rifle. I plan on hunting deer in nebraska in the near future with some old buddies who rifle hunt. I want the best gun to do both. I had a win 30.06 featherweight and it was not any fun to shoot. I'm leaning towards a 270 or a 243. Just thought I'd see what your thoughts were. Thanks

Just bought a Tikka T3 last night in .243. It seems like a really nice rifle but am gonna get it sighted in on Friday and slay some yotes this christmas break and when I am out in North Dakota!

Another caliber you may wish to check out is the 25-06. Hard to beat for long range coyote shooting and a good solid performing deer caliber. I purchased a 25-06 Remington BDL in the Varmint Special (heavy barrel) model in 1969. I have shot a bunch of critters with this round especially when I lived in Wyoming.

Ron, you read my freakin mind. 25-06 is a great caliber, that won't break the bank on shooting it. My mom shoots this caliber for a deer rifle, but it is an awesome coyote rifle, with unbelievable accuracy at long ranges. I have alot, and I mean ALOT of stats from a 25-06, 270, and 243. PM me if you want some of them.

For the ultimate deer/coyote killer I would recommend this...

The Barrett M82A1 in .50 cal has excellent knock down power for even the biggest of bucks, but also has the range to reach out and touch some long distance coyotes!!!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

TC encore /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif, then you can have whatever and however many calibers you want!!!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I too have a 25-06. Great all around gun, but is pretty brutal if you are into saving hides. From what I understand, it is very comparable to the .270.
I have friends who shoot the .243. They love that caliber for both deer and yotes as well.

if you get in to handloading you can get some loads for the 25-06 that are more hide friendly.

the guy that does handload at the gun shows, clover ridge reloads, will custom load some ammo for you. i had him make me some custom loads for my 243 a few years ago. one hint, ballistic tips (little red plastic tips on the bullets) are NOT hide friendly.

That good to know.

First yote I ever shot was with a .243 ballistic tip and it left an 8" hole coming out. Very devistating. And if you want to pick up that Barret .50 I know where you can get one for $8199 /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'd think about the TC encore or Pro Hunter and buy yourself a deer barrel (.270. 06 etc.)and a varmit barrel. .223 22.250 etc.

I hate to say because I'm a huge fan of .308 but a 30-06 would be a solid choice also. The reason being is the availability of bullet grains. Don't qoute me but I believe you go from a 40 grain all the way up to a 200 and some odd grain bullet.

25-06 is also a solid choice. My step-father has a Sako, talk about a solid gun!!!! He bought it mainly for groundhogs but has taken a few deer with it, WV is a hi-power state.

Hide damage, go with Nosler Partition, no matter what caliber. It retains a large percentage of its weight with out blowing apart and causing more damage. My step father primary deer rifle is a Rem 700 7mm Mag. Even in the 7mm Mag with a Nosler Partition there isn't a cannon ball size exit on deer.

My uncle has the 50 cal conversion kit for his AR-15. Talk about a BIG GUN.

I use a 7.63X39 SKS with a 30 round clip. I don't yote hunt as much as I used to, but if I didn't I'd upgrade to a .243 or thereabouts.

Bushmaster and Hornady teamed up and there is now a .450 cal. upper that "pins" onto the standard AR15 lower. MV is reportedly 2200fps with OK ballistics out to about 200-250 yards then it drops like a rock.

If I was gonna go late antlerless season I'd have one. With a max range of 200 yards and good optics I'd think the chance of killing shed bucks might be minimized. Then at night I’d put the .223 upper back on and go do some ‘yotes.
