Deer hunting doomed?

River Bttm Boy,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. If the rest of you haven't read this I encourage you to do so. I think this article makes some great points. Now, do you agree or disagree? What should we do?

I think a good starting place as iowawhitetail members is to promote taking of does and supporting the HUSH program. It not only helps control the deer population but generates good will by providing meat to the needy. If we can help make the program a success, we all benefit. Maybe we should make it a goal to have every member take a doe and donate it to the program. Possibly even stage a couple of dressing sessions to bone out the deer in a group setting... maybe the oldtimers could share some of their tricks first-hand!

I'll probaby catch flack for this, but I also think we need to quit focusing on inches and concentrate on the quality of the experience. I think the points raised in the article about the comraderie of deer hunting hit home. It's one of the reasons I enjoy stopping in here almost every day. Though there's a thrill in taking a deer (or turkey), it's always better if you have someone to share the experience with you. Pay for their tag and take a family member or a friend with you this season.

Okay, that's enough from me.

I think this is where our "rolling the does" comes into play. We really have a great opportunity to harvest a bunch of does.

I agree that the bowhunters I personally know are "trophy hunters" I had to take a step back in time and I realize I'm falling into the category also. My first 4 deer were does, however as I grew older and wanted to test my skill I switched to taking bucks. Now we have ample opportunities to kill both. I am excited to take a few does this fall!

Land leasing, is becoming a problem and causing competition. Eliminating the less fortunate opportunities to hunt in some instances.

Lets all have fun harvesting some does this year!

Nuff said!
