Deer Population?

I'm starting an oral report for a college class on managing deer population, and wasn't real sure on some of the numbers, so i thought i'd come here. Was wondering what the population numbers for deer the past couple years pre-season are, and also what the harvest numbers last year and projected this year are. Any links to sites as well would help a bunch.

Thanks All!!!!

Are you looking for data on Iowa, or other states? I can get you hard data on Nebraska's harvests because we have check stations and keep exact tabs on harvest. In Iowa, without check stations, the harvest numbers are estimated.

Shoot a private message to WJS, there's a chance he might know a couple things about our herd.

Mostly looking for info on Iowa, but some Nebraska numbers would be good for perspective as well.

One thing that you could use is one that all hunters will aggre upon. That is--- harvest does. Some say a good rule is shoot at least 2-3 does per buck. For down at our farm, we are going to try to harvest 15 does between 3 guys for the 2005 season. So far, we are at 5 but we're not even to second season shotgun or the late rifle doe season!!!

thanks everyone for the info. Did the presentation yesterday and went well. I definitely advocated harvesting does. My father(camoman) and i are very adamant about that. Again, thanks for all the help!

I am asuming you might be a iowa game warden. all my respect goes out to you guys. but how can you possibly know what shape your deer heard is in since you have no check stations and like i mentioned in previous posts i am a non-resident and i have never gotten anything to report on my kill or what so ever out of the six times i have been drawn since iowa open it up to non-residents. thankks Jim
