Deer vision

I've been hearing a lot about deer/ungulate vision lately and how they see in blues, yellow, purples and grey(which is made up of blues). Grey seems to be fairly popular in camo and the attitude of some camo companies is to avoid it since deer see it clearly, while others use it a lot. It seems like every company has something different to say anymore.

I know you can't get too caught up in all that and that sitting still and avoiding being silhouetted is more important than anything. But what are some of your thoughts?

Browns and Tans. Natural Gear is about the best that I have found, but they are lacking in making really quality gear. I am thinking of biting the bullet and buying Kryptek gear.

Personally I think all the camo hype is more for the hunter than the deer. Deer have great sensitivity to movement..but poor on depth perception. I sit on the ground in some of my spots and have had deer,,bucks and does, walk right past me only feet away, with no clue. Didn't matter what I was wearing. On the other hand, had a doe pick me out, when I moved 25 yrds away. I was in full camo, with a cedar behind me and a pile of brush in front of me.

I did some research on this and called Sitka on their findings as well...that's why I ended up going with them. The color is ALL FOR THE HUNTER. If it came down to it, red camo would be the best because deer don't see in that much color.

But who would buy red camo?

Same for pattern...you can try to break it up with stick patterns, leaf patterns, etc, but digital camo is what breaks you up the best. The military goes with it, research shows it.....the small squares break up lights and darks and break up the background behind you. That's why Sitka and predator type camos are far superior to anything else as far as concealment.

Why did Sitka move to a more gray color this year even though they know color has NOTHING to do with it? Straight from the horse's mouth - the hunter feedback wanted something more neutral instead of the fall green, so they gave them that. Why? Most of their clothing is sold in retail where the hunter can visually see and feel what they are buying....so, in the end? Increased sales.

Regardless of the color, Sitka knows the deer can't tell one bit of difference between this year's pattern, and the pattern of old.

Hope this helps.

Oh, the only color I'd stay away from is blue...I've read blue stands out more to the deer than other colors.

Just what Gladiator said.... Great reply! The new pattern is a great marketing strategy for Sitka they will sell a lot it. It's more eye appealing than the old but either will perform just fine.

Plaid is like digital camo only bigger pixels. It probably worked better than you think. Also why don't they make cheetah or tiger patterns works in nature?

Interesting stuff gladiator! From what I've read color doesn't matter much, but I still prefer to blend in as well with the natural surroundings as possible (must be my hunting OCD). It makes sense to give the customer what they want though.
I was taking to my brother and he said the army is going away from the digital ACU pattern and going to the scorpion (pretty much multi cam) pattern and he's glad. As a sniper he complained that the ACU was picked because it averaged the best overall in all environments, even though it never really tested extremely well in any one environment. The logic behind it was solid but it drove guys in his skill set nuts.

I never got the digital camo or really cared for predator camo either. Not real sure why I guess. To me if your patern is similar to your environment that is your best bet. Color, well wouldn't it be best to be similar color to your surroundings? Whatever colors deer see best aside, a copy of nature Imo is the best option. If your wearing a solid color or a patern unlike the woods wouldn't there be an area where things would appear different? Deer also see better on overcast days then sunny days so I am sure that plays a role. Also are you up in a tree or on the ground? So many options out there all a person can do is use what seems best. I started with wool pants and a knee length Brown coat and didn't even own a stand. Two things to me seem certain, solid blue is a no go, and get up in a tree with some cover and play the wind.
