Detailed broadhead question...

So I know that this question has probably got asked on here a zillion times, but I have a couple other questions to go along with the typical what broadhead do you use. I'm more so looking for those answers that use expandables since I already am locked into Muzzy 3 blade 100's for fix blades, but I know that there are situations where expandables come into play (especially with the possibility of turkeys in the same spot as deer I don't like to switch arrows if not needed.

Anyway here are the questions....

What broadhead do you like to use?
Why that one in particular (bone crushing? large holes? reliable?)
What set up are you using? (arrow, bow, pounds pulled)
What is the worst broadhead that you used, and why?

Just trying to get some more converstation going, while helping me with what head to use compaired to your experiences!

I wouldn't recommend trying to switch arrows while hunting, just whack the turkeys and deer with the same one. About the time you try to fiddle around with another arrow a pig will walk up under you and you won't have anything on the bow.

I've been really happy with Rocket Hammerheads the past few years. I switched from my Muzzy's just for fun and the holes/blood trails these things leave is unbelievable. I'm not sure what would happen if I caught solid bone with them but to prevent that I'm very picky about my shot selection. Broadside or slightly quartering away or nothing. The only bad shot I made the damage they made without hitting a vital organ was what killed the deer.

I'm shooting around 72 pounds out of my Bowtech Guardian and am using GoldTip Pro Hunter arrows.

Worse broadhead I've owned was a Steelforce. I was shooting them for practice and they whistled and planed horribly. I also hit a log and rather than sticking into the wood the broadhead fell apart into two pieces. I still have 5 brand new ones that I'm not sure what I'll do with.

I've really enjoyed the Rage 2-blades this past year. I had a doe almost completely bleed out in the 30 yards she ran...not much blood left in the cavities when I field dressed her. I will try a couple new blades on does this year, just to see how I like them because they are much cheaper than Rages!

I am shooting a Hoyt UltraMag at 70 pounds and, like Muddy, shooting Gold Tip Pro Hunter arrows as well. I love 'em, but am not married to them as Beman makes a great arrow as well.

Worst broadhead I've shot is the spitfire 125 grain expandables... My first shot with my 50 pound Bear bow (way back in the day) landed that broadhead about an inch into the shoulder and it fell out - of a nice buck, I might add!

Great thread; thanks for the post.

125 grain rocket stricknine expandable.

have shot 4 big bucks with the stricknine. They all have died within my sight or less than 80 yards.

I flowed with my crew and brought the 2 blade rage to illinois last year.
rattled in a giant 6x6 that got my 2 blade rage at 12 yards.
all 200 inches of him is still out there somewhere? if anybody recovered a big 6x6 with a rage in him I put it there.

stay away from the shoulder if you can.

the holes that thing leaves could not be plugged with a basketball.

after waiting for the shot of a lifetime I have 200% confidence in the stricknine.

Easton Axis and Easton Axis FMJ arrows.

I use two different heads Mugnus Snuffer SS and the 2 blade Rage. Those two heads couldn't be any more different, but they both fly great for me and I won't hesitate to put either one on the string. Those Magnus's are TOUGH and penetrate awesome. The Rage leaves a hole and blood on the ground that is unreal. I shot 4 deer with the Rage last year and every one was a pass through. Penetration hasn't been an issue with me.

They'll all do the job if you put them in the right place.

I shoot muzzy 3blades. Plain old reliabilty. They've never given me an issue. After last year I have really considered going to the Rage 3blade but you know that saying about dont fix something that aint broke. I will definatly stick to the muzzys for bear hunting this year.

Not saying they are the best broad head out there but I've been shooting muzzy's since they first came out in the 80's.Everything from elk to hogs. They have'nt let me down.We shot them into cow skulls(Not a live cow),3/4" plywood and 55 gallon drums. We were using heavy aluminum arrows and getting complete pass throughs in the 55 gallon drums. The head hardly ever came apart.Even shot some through concrete blocks.Worst broadhead ever used was the old carbon Satellites.

You should watch this broadhead test on UTUBE...the guy does a real good job testing a wide variety of heads in his test.

That was very cool. Looked like from his conclusions that the best expandables from what his selection was is that the grim reapers proved to hold up the best. As for the fixed blades, the innerlock (most similar to the muzzys) held up the best.

I'm suprised no one has chimed in about the WASP Jackhammers, I know there are quiet a few of their faithful out there.

I think right now I'm leaning towards Hammerheads. I've shot the stealheads and really liked them, but not enough cut for turkeys IMO. But a close second is a tie between the Jackhammers and now from that video the Grim Reaper 100's.

Jak's and Grim reapers are hard to beat if you ask me. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
Lots of good heads out now to choose from depending on your preferances

The only broadheads that I have ever seen "fail" (as they say) were Steel Force 125 grain (2 blade with bleeders) and Tekan 2's. I had a similar event as to what muddy explained above occur with the steel force and my brother shot a buck 3 years ago that took a Tekan through both rear lung lobes and didn't open. It was locked somehow. We recovered the buck, but it took him over 6 hours to die and left what looked like a field point holes upon autopsy.

I shoot Jakhammers and wasn’t going to “expound their virtue” because there are so many good heads out there I’m not going to try to sell anything. Jakhammers ain’t broke for me. I bought 2 three packs and replacement blades earlier this year.

I was killing time this evening and stopped by Fin & Feather. Half of their broadhead section was Rage heads: one flavor of Kool Aid I won’t be sipping…… not criticizing them, just don’t feel any need to try them.

Had the same experience with two deer I shot in the same day last year with the tekkans. Both my big 8 I shot that morning and a doe I shot that evening and on neither of them the expandables opened. The buck went down within about 30 yards but not much of a trail to it with tiny entry and exit holes. I managed to clip a lung and some major arteries to the heart with that little tip on it. The doe was about the same but she went about 100 yards.

G5 100 gr. broadheads

Never even tried expandables. I've had some luck with replaceable blade broadheads, all three blade, but got absolutely HOOKED on the G5's last year. I had one that I shot through 4 does and it sharpened up great after every time with their Diamond stone. Plus they make good practice heads. Definately not broke on this end.

I've shot a LOT of different heads through the years and up to now, the best combo I've found is Slick Trick Magnums for deer and Rocket Hammerheads (2" cut) for turkeys. There's no issue with switching back and forth because they both shoot like field points so you never have to adjust your sights. The Slick Tricks make a HUGE entry hole with top notch penetration plus the blades are replaceable which saves money. Best all around head I've found. I also have some G5 Montecs and they are a great head which can be hand sharpened but sight adjustment is needed. For those that don't mind adjusting for broadheads, the Montec is king IMO. One of the only heads I haven't tried are the Rage expandables. They seem to be deadly but just too much $$$ for my taste when other options have proven themselves. It's not my intention to toot any horns but proof of my setup is worth more than words on a forum. In 2007, I shot 10 deer with the Slick Tricks and recovered 9 out of 10, 7 of the 9 recovered were pass through shots. The unrecovered doe was not the heads fault, it was my poor shot placement. I shot 2 turkeys with the Hammerheads, both of which were recovered within 50 yds of the shot. My compound is a 63# Bowtech Allegiance.

I also shoot a 48# longbow and will use either Woodsman 3 blades or Magnus Stinger 2 blades through that setup after I'm able to do more extensive testing with each this summer.

My brother shot his buck last year with a rage 3 blade and got a complete pass thru and not a single blade opened.I don't know about the 2 blades?

I would of liked to see the barrel test with the G5 montec.I'd bet being a 1 piece machined head it would have to perform very well.

This year I am shooting MX-3 by muzzy. Tune so they shoot great, big cutting diameter and now I don't have to be nervous about expandables.

LAST YEAR, I shot RAGE 2-blade, my buddy's screwed up on him AND all of mine would always open when I didn't want them to no matter how careful I was. They might be fine for some people BUT I just won't use something that makes me nervous it could screw up as I do enough screwing up on my own without additional screw ups from my equipment.
