Digital camcorder recommendations

I am evaluating purchasing a digital camcorder tomorrow AM and would appreciate any input or advice that anyone can offer. The leading candidate right now is a Sony DCRHC26. It is a 20x optical zoom, Zeiss lens, has night shot mode.

The two primary uses would be taping kids soccer games and wrestling matches and of course... taping the many bucks that get passed up throughout the bow season.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

The Zeiss lens makes the picture on that camera awesome. I was debating between the Sony, JVC, and Canon and ended up with the JVC based upon max optical zoom (25x) and I also liked the size and comfort of the JVC. The picture quality I feel is comparable to the Sony and the camera at the time was much cheaper, I think I payed 279 or so. However, I still feel that the sony is superior based upon the have the best night shot hands down and the Zeiss lens.

The one thing that I have found is that the stabilization at high zoom is incredibly tough while in the treestand. I am thinking about getting one of those mounting brackets to improve upon it.

My brother and I have been looking at the Canon G-something (I can't remember what model for sure?), just seems majority of people use them and have great experince with them!

I asked the same thing last summer and ended up following some advice and going for the JVC. No complaints with it so far. It is very compact and as mentioned, the zoom is great. I think i paid a bit over $300 for it.

I had looked at the one you are Daver, I also liked it. That lens is crystal clear. They had one down at Mister money, perhaps you could go down there and offer them a bargain price.

I just bought the Sony DCR-HC32 for only $299 ! It has night shot infrared capabilities as well as a LANC port so it could be plugged into a V_man or Wildlife Eye type of video deer camera housing. I did a lot of research and found that this is the one for me. It even comes with a nice docking station to transfer video to your computer and charge the batteries up real easily. I still can't believe how small it is, I really think I'm going to like it.

Well, my wife went and bought the Sony DCRHC26 that I mentioned in the original post. I only looked at it briefly last night, but it seems like it will work very nicely out in the timber. The picture quality is pretty amazing, I would have to say that I am already looking forward to taping next Fall.

I think I will try to build a "catalog" of all of my hunts this coming season and end up with a 2006 collage of sorts. Has anyone ever done this before and are there any suggestions in terms of editing, etc, to accomplish this? I know I would like to sit and watch a tape of my hunts from 2005 today, instead of just working from memory entirely.
