Distemper?

How hard are all your coons getting hit? I was back home shed hunting this weekend and found over 30 coons dead on one of our farms. There were three raccoons 10 yards from each other and 50 yards away there were two dead coyotes. The stomachs of the coons had been eaten on, that's why I was thinking the coyotes died of distemper too. All the coons and two yotes were all fresh.

Pretty crazy stuff if it can wipe out coons that fast on one farm!

Is it possible that someone hunted them up and then left them? With fur prices so low, perhaps someone didn't want to bother with them.

I have heard that if a predator eats a critter that has been poisoned with a blood thinner (Warfarin/Coumadin) the predator will die of the poison. If that is true that may explain the 'yotes as well.

I was going to add a video of all the dead coons, won't let me. It's definitely not anyone hunting them! I don't think our new neighbors would be poisoning coons since they're about 75 and there aren't any other houses close enough to that area. I could be wrong! Poisoning does make sense, but that's a lot of coons dying in a short period any they're scattered across the 800 acre farm.

Possums were fine and I had a bunch on trail cam, the coons were there every day until Wednesday and then there weren't any at all. That's why I was thinking it was distemper, but it's odd they're dying in groups and they coyotes died so fast.

I'm in Oklahoma and a 2 years ago we had a die off, but it was in the spring. Found the majority of them were in the creeks or ponds. The fever comes with distemper and drives them to the water. Kinda early for it I'm thinking.

It's been warm here, I've found all of them by creeks/ponds.

Warfarin kills much slower than what TH described & rarely has high enough levels in the dead to affect anything that eats them. It's one of the advantages of that type of poison vs. strychnine and a bunch of other nasty ones most of which are illegal these days. Illegal also includes using Golden Malrin for killing raccoons or anything else other than flies!!!

I'm going out on a limb but they look to be dead before they reached your place. Dumped maybe by your friends? Coons are worth nothing and takes a good yote to bring a good price.

We had a coon show up at our house in late December. Stayed around a couple days. First saw it while letting the dog out & I was within 15 yds of it (thought it was weird it let me get so close). Next day there were a lot of tracks going in circles in the snow & my wife saw it rolling around in the water in the road ditch. That night it was moving around by sliding around on its side and looked pretty weak. I ended its suffering.
