Ok i know this is Iowa whitetail, but i am looking for a do it yourself elk hunt. I know I am a little late for this year so i am trying to line something up for me and a couple of buddys next year. I am willing to spend the extra dollar for a higher chance of tagging out on a bull, but really would like to do it without a guide.

So does anyone know of a good place to try and stick a bull elk? Any imput would be great appreciated.

Thank
tom

One of the biggest questions is what size of elk you're after. If looking for more of a trophy, start applying in CO and WY for preference/bonus points. This will put you in a limited draw where the chances of getting a larger bull are better. However, the down side is that it takes a few years to draw. You can still buy a bonus point for WY the remainder of this month. CO has the largest elk herd and you can buy OTC tags for both archery and rifle for some units. The better units take some points to draw. I've been playing the point game in both of these states. I have no experience with the other states.

Check out the CO DOW and WY G&F websites to get an idea for what units are OTC and which ones require just a few points to draw. There's a lot of info out there but it takes time to research.

PM any specific questions you have and I'll do my best to answer them. The best advice i ever received was when you think you're in shape for elk hunting, keep going and get in even better shape. Hiking at 10,000 feet really sucks the air out of us flatlanders!
