DNR to Host Public Meeting April 29 on Proposed Wildlife Rules

DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a public meeting to discuss a number of new proposed regulations including changes to deer, waterfowl, and turkey hunting seasons and some changes to the trapping seasons. The meeting will be conducted over the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) on April 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"This is an opportunity for our hunters and people who support wildlife to give us some feedback on these regulations," said Dale Garner, chief of the DNR's wildlife bureau. "We will go over the proposed regulations and seasons and our rational behind each change, and take comments from anyone willing to speak, then, if there is any time remaining, we will open the discussion to other topics."

The proposed changes include reducing the number of fall turkey hunting licenses that will be available, changing the counties that will be open for the November and January antlerless deer seasons and changing when the antlerless licenses for these seasons will go on sale. Other topics include proposed waterfowl season dates and restrictions on placing traps in roadways before the trapping season begins.

Any interested person may make written suggestions or comments on the proposed changes on or before April 29, 2009. Persons who wish to convey their views orally should contact the Wildlife Bureau at (515) 281-5034 or at the Wildlife Bureau offices on the fourth floor of the Wallace State Office Building. Written comments may be sent to the Wildlife Bureau Chief, Department of Natural Resources, Wallace State Office Building, Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034; or faxed to (515) 281-6794.

The DNR will have staff members from the wildlife bureau at each site to answer questions, and to take any written comments.

I would stronly encourage anyone that can make it to one of the locations to go. I think it is a tool for the DNR uses to get public opinion on rules so it's a chance to speak up. It's almost embarassing how under representated deer hunters are at these meetings. At least the ones I've been to.
 
Finally a DNR meeting that I think my schedule will allow me to attend. Unless my social director (wife) has made other commitments for me I plan to be at the Ottumwa site to hear what is said and maybe get some one to answer me about deer population.
 
I was to one these meetings maybe 3 yrs. ago in Decorah. It was interesting. My feeling was that the DNR had pretty much made up their minds before the meeting started. I know some stuff gets decided after the legislative session is over but not sure how much is decided that late. Randy, can you comment on things that will still be up in the air at that time?
 
I won't try to comment for Randy or the IBA, but I think anything the DNR can set without the approval of the legislature is up for grabs. For example the number of NR antlerless tags could be changed at the whim of the DNR, only of course, after the public has weighed in on the topic. This is not to say this is a proposed rule change, and I’m not sure what all is under the purview of the DNR itself and what is controlled and mandated to the DNR by the legislature. I’m just sayin that if the DNR wants an administrative rule change I think they pretty much happen whatever the public comments are. This should not be used as an excuse not got to the meetings and voice your opinions. I’m just sayin if you don’t represent your views then you got no complaint when (or if) the administrative rules get changed.

I’ll be at the Marion meeting mainly so I can bitch, if needed, later.

Amen bonker. Wish this wasn't on a wednesday, the wife works an overnight. Hopefully I have time to get a sitter. Don't want to miss out on this. Like to share some ideas even if they fall on deaf ears.
 
I'd agree with Bonker.

Not sure who was in charge at the meeting you attended Daryl, but it should be a little less abrasive this year from the DNR side.Dale Garner will be in charge for DNR. They have proposed some changes, nothing major but enough to warrant going to meeting.
