DOE ONLY

When I started deer hunting, a "anysex" tag was really hard to come by. The "buck only" tag was the norm. Man how times have changed.

With all the pressure on the DNR to reduce the herd numbers in Iowa why not have one year that was "doe only" across the board for all seasons.

Can you imagine what that would do for the buck to doe ratio in this state?!

I'm sure the "horn porn" trophy hunters would have a total fit!!!

It sure would make the following year something to look forward to...that's for sure!

Law enforcement would also be easy. If the deer had antlers.....busted!

How many non-resident tags would we sell?

Blast from the past, I remember how I anxiously awaited the arrival of my deer license to see if I "won the lotto" and got an any-sex tag.

Deer were hard to find, let alone holding out for the big boys. Why don't we go back to that system, only this time have only a few any-sex licenses and the majority of licenses doe-only? I think I can hear the howling starting

If it went doe-only (which isn't going to happen this year), it would be my second year in a row, as last year I had a self imposed doe only year. I would have to temper that statement though, if Mister BIG happened to present himself last year, and if I had an any-sex license, I would have taken him. I did let many little guys walk.

Ghost,

That plan has a lot of merit and might help convince more hunters to actually get out and take some does, though I imagine some would just hang up the gun for a year. Maybe if landowners knew the bucks were safe, they'd be more willing to let others on their land to help thin out the does.

Or maybe it needs to be set up as a provisional two-year program ... if not enough does go down year one, then a second year of doe-only kicks in. You can bet a lot of folks on this site would be whackin' and stackin' (although many are already doing more than their fair share in the doe department).

In all this latest hoopla, I may have missed it, but has the HUSH program been expanded? There has to be an outlet for the meat if they really expect more does to be harvested.

Threebeards...

I was half way joking just because I know that it would never fly and be met with much resistance from the majority of hunters.

But seriously, I think it would be the best thing that could ever happen to Iowa deer hunting. And furthermore, why wouldn't the insurance people be happy about a major doe harvest.

Once again, this would be met with all the big money being lost in the state.

Good thing I'm not in charge.....because Iowa would have at least one year of "DOE ONLY!"

I'm dreaming about all the sheds you could find the following Spring!!!

Ghost,

I was only half-joking too. It is fun to think about all those sheds!!

I did happen to go back on the DNR site and read about the expansion of the HUSH program. It will be statewide and currently there are 80 lockers signed up (they are hoping for 100). Lockers get $60 per deer and Food Bank of Iowa gets $1 per deer to help cover handlng costs. [That fee comes from license fee]. They hope to process 5,000 deer, up from 3,500 the first two years.

That should help get more does taken. You can only eat so much vension!

I too would support it. It would be a good time to catch some big ones on video . I also like the idea of more sheds on the ground. I am almost sure it would be the year that "THE BIG ONE" would walk under my tree.

Ghost- I think the "plan" has to be that the insurance company picks up the tab for lost DNR revenue because high $ tags aren't sold. I read somewhere that the average collision bill is $1500. Either that or I'm sure they will reduce our insurance rates in the following year- right?

Holy Cow!!! Can you imagine what it would be like if it could happen just one year??? That would be awesome. I would want a provision in there that said I would get at least two preference points for a tag the following year. And no kidding about the shed hunting!! WOW!

The sad thing is you probably couldn't sell 50% of the tags. That is unless, it was an earn a tag type thing. Confucius say: You no buy doe tag this year, you no get buck tag next year.

Sounds like a plan to me.
