I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure you could only purchase one antlerless tag prior to Sept. 15th. My guess is that they went on sale at midnight?????? Or perhaps Not! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Iowa's number one resource for the whitetail deer.

I stayed up till 12:01 to attempt to purchase a tag...and as I watched them sell out, it wouldnt let me buy one..I was up till 1:30 trying, and nothing. Now at 5:30, it will let me, but my county is sold out...go f-ing figure...not a happy camper over here....

Early Muzzy anysex is all sold out statewide, WTF?

I want to hunt does for Early Muzzy, Shotgun 2, Late Muzzy and Late Antlerless. Im having trouble getting tags online. This will make the 3rd year that this system has confused me. It looks like the only people it allows to buy doe tags for Early Muzzy are those who have a anysex for Early Muzzy.

My transaction errors after I put in my credit card, and I have to start over from the beginning. I am a programmer who designs systems just like this, and this is P..ng me off!!

This is correct.

I think they are trying to spread the hunting pressure across all seasons. There might be a slight fear that if the tags were unlimited, everybody would want to have "first" crack at the deer and go early muzzleloader.

If you know a landowner that is involved in the DNR's depredation program, you can get antlerless tags for any of the seasons you've mentioned that are not subject to the county quota. You also don't have to have an anysex tag to get them for early muzzleloader. It's been one of my favorite ways to whack does the last couple of years, and the landowner just gave me a bunch of barcode sheets for doe tags again this year. Something worth checking into anway...

The early ML hunt was originally meant as a primitive weapon season to allow those few hunters willing to accept the extra challenge of a relatively primitive, hard to load, short range, some what inaccurate and unreliable weapon to have a chance to hunt deer. It was held in October to give a little advantage in weather and cover to these primitive hunters similar to the bow hunters of that time, and give them a chance at unpressured deer. At first there were only 5000 licenses allowed and still didn't sell out mostly because if you got an early ML license you couldn't get any other gun license for that year. As the muzzle loaders became more advanced and turned into 150 yard killers, and some of the license restrictions went away more hunters saw this season as a good chance to have a shot at a nice buck before the pressure of bow hunters and the rut put them off. As a result of the extra demand the DNR raised the quota to 7500 licenses and now they sell out way early. There is also some what of a safety issue with both bow hunters and ML hunters being in the field at the same time that keeps the license numbers restricted.

Shot my first doe of the year last night and my second tonight. Both with the TC Omega. Landowner had shooting permits and asked if I'd fill a few. Heck ya I will. Felt good to get my hands dirty again.

My old man went to walmart at 4am yesterday morning and bought 5 doe tags for gun season 1.. Looks like im gonna have some shootin' to do on my whole 2 days of hunting this year.

Wow, I might have to look into the depredation program again. Last time I looked, I had to conform to "regular" seasons. The depredation tags were only available for the seasons that were open for "regular" hunters. Does this landowner have a "high value" crop that he is protecting?

Yes, if a landowner in the depredation program signs an agreement they can get shooting permits to kill deer as early as mid July. The material I read is that this is to protect crops that cannot afford to have the damage done in the first place. An example would be an apple tree orchard. This is different than the normal depredation tags, and the "season" ends this Friday, the 19th. The landowner can get a certain number of "shooting permits" and designate someone else to do the shooting. We chose just to wait until the youth season, but I was surprised when the landowner told me we could've been shooting deer since July.
