Dog Attack:

This is sort of off subject of deer, but there has been alot of talk on here in the past about loose dogs. I have had numerous arguements with county officials over people with loose dogs. Law enforcemenr says the three S's. I had a County Supervisor tell me once he was OK with it. That is why some move to the country, to let their dogs run free. If you can believe it! I couldn't! Sat Morn was the last straw for me. I am still Steaming,,and was a wake-up call. This was not out in the country either. Was in my town of 2,000 people, on a public bike trail. The trail goes past a construction sight. There has been a huskie, sheperd mix chained out there for yrs. Chained and seemingly ignored right along the bike trail. It always lunged at everyone passing. I never liked the looks of the thing and always told my wife the city should get that thing outta there. Sat morn I was walking her little 12 yr old lap pup, who would not bite her fleas, when the dog came running out across the lot. I thot it would just run up and sniff us. It ran up and viciously attacked our dog. Had it in it's jaws. Squalling and barking ensued. There was noone around, I had no weapon,,other than my foot. I kicked the dog for all I was worth, screaming at it. Mad, Adreniline pumping. After I don't know how long it dropped our dog. I reached down to pick her up and got bit on my thumb, not sure which dog. With our limp dog in my arms the deamon dog was again tryng to get at her in my arms!! Then,, a truck pulled up. I ran over to it,said is that your dog? He said yea,,I said look what it has done! He had the usual line,,Ah,,musta broke it's chain. There was no chain around. Ah,,never done that before. Yea right.. I am shaking and pumped again as I write.,,,,I carried our dog home. Of coarse it is Sat. Try to find a Vet. finally we did. Vet said our dog was punchured, broken ribs,,bad shape. she said take to ISU-Animal Hospital. Our dog is ther now. In intensive care. Great place up there. Better than a human Hospital. Doc there says cost may be 2,000$ and dog may not make it. I had to go to emergency afterward to get X-rays of thumb and antibiotic shots. I called owner told him he was paying all of this. He grumbled at it and nieghbors say he is a tough cookie. I had presence of mind to call police when it happened and going down in person this morn to make sure facts are straight. I will not be caught helpless again. I am sick and tired of all these idiots having loose dogs. A permit to carry is in my future,as well as a Lawyer I suspect. Sorry for long wind,,I feel better though!

WOW that is nuts!! I am sorry to hear that about your dog though. It would of been awesome to have been carrying a handgun that day that is for sure.

Sorry about your dog. Hope the guy has insurance. That will make it easier to get something for the bills.

Boone County. You bet this winner is footing every bill. If I have to get a Lawyer so be it. Having a loose mean, dog running around a public bike trail, attacking people, I could take him to the cleaners..The Vet at ISU said too bad you didn't have a gun. He said it's been his experience if a dog would attack another small dog, they are even more likely to attack small children, and there are alot of small children on the trail . The biggest hurddle I face is the casual attitude about loose dogs you find everywhere.

If he has insurance they will probably come to the table ready to settle. Insist the attacking dog be destroyed in that settlement.

I dont know, but in Wisconsin, if a neighbors dog tears into another dog, it is cause for putting down the aggressive dog, law. Or at least in our township. As for the bills, Darn right he should be paying for everything. I would definately push to have the other dog put down!

I just watched one of those court shows on tv last week where about the same thing happened and the lady was suing the guy for vet bills and emotional damages. The guy denied ownership of the dog and even tho everyone knew it was his the lady had no proof that he owned it so the judge threw the case out. Make sure you collect your evidence before the guy catches on and gets rid of the dog.

I would be pissed also.. I HATE loose running dogs.. My neighbors dog comes and craps right infront of both my front and back doors to my house... One time the dog came over and I was doing something outside and it lifted its leg to mark a tree. Without hesitation I ran and punted that sum-bi%$& right in the balls as his leg was up and he squeeled back home! I thought it was hilarious.... You definately need to get a carry permit... I just bought myself a Smith&Wesson M&P40C yesterday and it is an awesome sub-compact handgun. Shoots very nice. I recommend it to anyone. I picked it up at Fin&Feather in Iowa City for $499 and Scheels had them for $549.

This reminds me of something that happened a couple years ago to me... I was mushroom hunting/turkey scouting some public ground by me and way back in the woods, I run into this guy that has 9 beagles running around with him. I politely told him that dogs aren't allowed in public hunting areas during the spring because of nesting birds (turkey and waterfowl)... He snapped at me and yelled "I know what the damn law is and this is a public Wildlife Management Area, and that's different from just Public Hunting"... So, I just turned around and called my local CO, Tom Campbell, and he said that the dogs aren't supposed to be there. I waited by the guys vehicle until Campbell showed up and he said he would wait around and take care of it. About an hour later, Campbell called me back and said that the guy came walking out of the woods with the dogs and when he confronted him, the guy said "They aren't my dogs" and he freakin got in his vehicle and drove away! Campbell said there was nothing he could really do about it because he didn't have any proof and the dogs had no collars. I can't remember what he said he ended up doing with the dogs, but man I hate people like that!

Sorry to hear that Ed, I hope your dog makes a full recovery. I would strongly suggest making a call to the local police department and filing this incident with them. That may come in handy later if there is a dispute about who is paying for what, etc.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went down to talk to police chief this morn, He said he was behind me 100% Said he could not have dog put down. Unless beyond doubt it was attacking me instead of dog. He has wife as a vet and loves his own dogs and said he would have blown dog away! Encouraged me to get permit to carry. I know not all police like the new laws. He came over this after noon. Said he talked to owner and owner said his Insurance would pay all the bills. We shall see.Went to see poor dog today. Man that ISU animal hospital great place,,if ya got the $$! If I was sick take me there! Saw poor little pooch hobbling around all bandaged up,,brought steam to my ears all over again! Have to get over this. Thanks agaain for best wishes.

Man, I am sorry to hear this. It had to be all you could do, to not pull him out of his truck. Good to hear she is hanging in there. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry to bring this up again about dogs, but now debate is developing on if a dog attacks other dogs, is it any threat to humans? I say yes. If a dog will try to kill another dog, I don't want it around people. I know alot of you out there have more experience with dogs, so I am posing the question. Thanks. Update on my dog. Her prospects are gardedly optomistic.

Growing up in the country I have been around dogs a long time. Have had dogs that are aggressive and others that wouldn't hurt a fly. I have had neighbors shoot dogs because they were just out running and have had neighbor dogs attack one of my dogs or even me. MOST people where I live understand what to do in this situation however there are few who don't see a problem with it. It really makes me angry to hear this happen. The dogs we had that were aggressive didn't live long and the dogs that came on to our property who were aggressive didn't live long either.

2010 I had a huskie charge me while I was deer hunting late muzzleloader season while I had my muzzleloader in hand. He got within ten yards and I didn't know what to do until I heard the blast of my muzzleloader and the dog pile up right infront of me. Freaked me out and made me feel really bad shooting such a beautiful animal. I was pretty upset I didn't even re load my gun and went home. I ended up calling it a season after that figured I could wait till next season. Even though the dog charged me and I wasn't sure what he was going to do I felt bad killing a dog like that.

I have a male chocolate lab who seems to be getting pretty aggressive and I am having thoughts of taking him out to put down. Not what I want to do because I know I will heart broken if and when I do it. He happens to be a present I bought for my wife. Either way I have a one year old daughter and don't need scars or even worse. The lab has snipped at my wife when she tries to correct him while he is in the house. His hair stands on end when someone walks by us at the park and he has a pretty aggressive bark when he sees them.

I guess what I am saying is sometimes it is hard to do the right thing but as dog owners we need to do the responsible thing and make sure people come first.

just my two cents worth

Depends on the situation. For instance. Long story made short My 2.5 year old German shorthair and 2 month old lab, "lab is short hairs daughter" so the short hair thinks. a friends dog barked and growls at the lab so the short hair attacks viciously. Finally get her off the other dog and what do u know I get a big ass vet bill for around 800$ which no dog is worth that in my opinion but if some one else is paying it hey why not. But now 5 years later my 2 year old never leaves the short hair alone, jumps on her pulls her ears every once in a while and has never attacked ANY thing agian.

I should probally keep this to myself but here we go. I LIVE IN AN AREA THAT HAS A DOG TIE UP LAW. I want to get that out first, when my wife and I moved in we spent around $2000 on fencing materials because we like the fact we don't have to put our dog on a chain.

I can not believe the amount of jackwagons who live around me. I have a path worn around the front of my house from other peoples dogs walking around.
I was picking up dog sh@t the other day and throwing it back in my neighbors yard when she came out and looked at me like what the hell was I doing. She has been telling me they are going to put up a fence for 3 years.

I told her I can drive her to Walmart and help her pick out a chain, my wife tells me I am an a@@hole and I should live out in the sticks by myself. I keep telling her the kids are not 18 yet. Is it me or do people just have a huge case of lack of respect, I think I should pull my pants down walk over and take a dump in the middle of there driveway.

There dog attacked the other neighbors dog a few months ago, the funny thing was theirs was on a leash and the other one ran into the street after it.

I will quit venting, and hope your dog makes a full recovery. If people can't keep their dogs under control they shoud get rid of them, the bad thing is its not the dogs fault just the stupid owners.

Yes I understand all of what has been said. Dogs are tamed down wolves. The way our society is, people think of them as little kids. Every one seems to have one from the poorest welfare people to the very rich. Few people seem to take the responsibility seriously. The idiots are the main problem and if they are not responsible, we have to take things into our own hands, like a good weapon in our hand. My wife and I were just out walking the city streets tonight and were startled by a lab running at us. He was tied in the front yard but the tie didn't look all that good to me. No one out there. Probabaly inside watching TV. I was steamed again. Got to get that permit. Should have had my big club for starters. If I had a dog that tried to nip, at me or family member, or other animal,, it would be gone same day. Zero tolerance for this Crap!

That cracks me up about throwing it back in there yard. I am glad I don't live in town cause I would have zero tolerance for that.Just start storing it in a 5 gallon bucket for about a month then dump it right in there driveway or front step

The funny thing is that I live outside of town, we have a county tie up law. Being just far enough outside of town to have close neighbors is worse, they seem to think they are in the country so hell they don't need to pen them up.
I do like the idea of saving the dog poop.....
