Donating deer meat

Does anyone out there know where I could donate some deer meat? The fact of the matter is, I would love to harvest more does from our property, but simply don't have the freezer space (they are full of deer already) and don't have the people to feed it to. I would be more than happy to fill several antlerless tags if there would be a way to give the meet away in a proper manner. Between my dad and I, we usually shoot four deer a year.....and we are getting to the point where we are running out of room for it all. Anyone have any ideas out there? Don't know if there are any "hunters helping the hungry" programs around or not..... Thanks!

i dont know if hunters feeding the hungry is still out there or not. but we give most of our deer away. between my dad and i we usually shoot between10-15 deer a year, and give most away to people at work, and family and friends, alot of people that dont hunt, suprisingly are willing to pay for the butchering and gladly take the deer. that is just what we do, maybe you could find some friends that would like some or somebody from work, good luck!!

Not sure on that one Gunner. Your best bet would probably be to get ahold of IDNR and ask them if there are any donation programs in your area. Let us know if you do happen to find anything out, I've got a few does on my property that could use a new home.

just kidding, the DNR have really relaxed the keeping and giving away deer meat from the previous seasons.Ask some of your other relatives, cousins inlaws and such.
Get the doe tags and shoot them, skin them and quarter them and debone them.People will take the meat but most dont want to mess with much of the butchering.
I love to hunt whitetails, out of four of them i have 40 rings of bolonay left.2 were prosesed this way the other 2 were butcherd by me,and i have a rather small freezer.People will take it a lot faster if they dont have to do much of the work.
My son shot one also so i messed with 5 of them.
Could check out the State of Iowa web page and put it in their search. If theres a program for it,it might be found there.

call whitetails unlimited or ted nugents call of the wild local chapter one of them has a program where if you kill the deer they will process it for you and give it to the poor

I thought there was a FHFH program in Iowa City and DesMoines.(Farmers and Hunters feeding the Hungry). It probably will be advertised closer to hunting season and there was a new bill in the legislature about feeding the prisons with deer- not sure of the statis on that one.

GunnerJon,
I don't know where you live but I see you are a college student. If you are in the Iowa City area you can take it to the locker in Solon. They are part of the program. Ruzicka's Meat Processing, 319.624.2870. Good Luck. Maybe I will try to get a list to post in the News and Events, seems to be a good idea.

Thanks for the lead, Limb......and thanks for all those other ideas, guys. In past slug seasons my dad and I have given away a few deer to friends, and this year I am sure I can give away at least one doe. It is getting hard to find anyone who wants the meat. Seems like everyone my Dad and I know already hunt deer or have family members who supply the meat to them. I just need a place to send several more. With all those doe tags available, I want to try to thin the herd around our timber a little more this year. Thanks!
